What a coincidence, I'm torn also even though I got a just got a used DRRI yesterday. I'll make my final decision after I put my DRRI through its paces over the next few weeks, since part of me is thinking "should I have got the new AC15?". A used DRRI and a new AC15C1 are priced closely.

The new AC15's sound much better to me than the previous generation of Custom Classics. But they sound different than a DRRI. In a perfect world I would have both since I like both sounds. Sorry I guess I'm of no help to you since I cannot decide between the two myself. LOL!

Actually, I'm probably going to wait it out for a few more months and see if any of the AC15C1's start hitting the used amp market.

I'm thinking I'd go with the DRRI myself but it really depends on the tone you prefer the most. Good luck choosing!!

I would also go with the DRRI but then again I'm no big fan of Vox so my opinion shouldn't count.

Best of luck from me also with your 'tone-quest'

I was completely sold on the DRRI and I feel it is a very good sounding amp. Then I played the VOX. The VOX has a very full sound. I hate to buy both but I might have to. Iv,e never been so torn.

I got the new VOX AC15C1 about two weeks ago - sold my HRDX. The new AC15C1 with the 12" Greenback in it is a very well balanced amp and has got quite a bit of clean headroom.

It also has the Normal and Top Boost channels. This is an upgrade from the AC15cc. Tha AC15C1 has powerful cleans, and great Top Boost chime and grit that Vox is known for. Best $600 I've spent in a long time.

Now I am waiting on my Tim OD and a Nova Delay!! You can't go wrong with the Vox AC15C1!

Makes the HRDX sound like.....well you know what I mean....lol

Well, its not a DRRI but I have a Fender vibrolux, 1981, and picked up the AC15C1. Side by side, the Vox is much more versatile I have to say. The cleans have a nice edge and it gave my telecaster and whole new definition of tone. In fact I would have to say the VOX has exposed a whole range of tones in my tele that I have never experienced before unless with a variety of boost and distortion pedals. It can go edgy clean to crunchy chime. Just amazing the tonal capabilities between clean and dirty settings in the Top Boost Channel, plus it has another whole personality in the normal channel and approaches the Fender sound when using it. So overall I would give the VOX an 8 or 9 rating and the Fender 6-7.

But...I would not want to be without the Fender because it has a more earthy rough, but clean tone and the reverb is overall better. Not that the VOX has a bad reverb, its has a repeating sound which diminishes in volume and is less authentic than the smooth fade of a Fender.

One or the other would be based on the following:

A loud band, I might side with the Fender and rely on pedals for tonal variations. Recording wise, the VOX because it just has a larger range of tonal options. If the band was not excessively loud the VOX would work and you can get many sounds from the amp which would lessen the need for clean boost or distortion pedals.

All of the above with a telecaster. Things change when using a stratocaster. I plugged my Strat, American Delux, into the VOX and its was very good, but there was more magic tone with the Fender. I really do think the variety of pickup settings on a strat are expressed better with the Fender. It seems the the enhancement of the VOX which colors the Tele in a very flattering way, somewhat dominates the natural tone of the Strat. It is not unusable with a strat but different pickup settings on the middle and neck pickup seemed to have less tonal difference. The in-between (middle and bridge) and the bridge alone seemed fine.

My conclusion, I have never heard my tele sound as good as the VOX in any under 40 watt amp (although the AC15C1 is a 15 watt amp). In a word, killer tone. But I will keep the Fender Vibrolux because it sounds significantly better with the Strat. What I will be selling is my Blues Junior to cover the cost of the VOX. It completely blows the BJr out of the water.

Not a DRRI to VOX comparison but somewhat similar.
