My 65 twin is a couple years old. The normal side has very low volume, whereas the reverb side is fine. Am I looking at the preamp tubes? I believe they are the 12AX7's. My question is, am I looking in the right place for the problem? I also noticed the many flavor of 6L6, AX and AT tubes. If I retube, any suggestions?

I would start by checking the tubes first. Swap V1 and V2 and see if the problem switches to the other channel. For replacement tubes, I like tung-sol.

I replaced the four AX and two AT tubes but still no normal circuit volume. I'm not sure how the 6L6's distribute power across the circuit. I purchased a matched quad set of Ruby Tubes, although I have not replaced them yet. Reason: I don't understand the importance of biasing the amp. The existing tubes all have a normal orange glow. As I said, the reverb inputs work fine. Unless anyone has any ideas, guess I need to take it to an authorized electronic repair shop.

Holy $@!&, is 63supro aware of this? According to him the 65 RI amps never fail, $@!& like this only happens to the Hot Rod series amps.

All kidding aside, check out Eurotubes full retube kits, they are really convienent and JJ tubes are awesome!

Based on what you've told us, it doesn't sound like a tube issue since you've replaced all the critical tubes and you still have a problem. There has to be something else going on. Biasing is not an issue with preamp tubes since they are set to a fixed bias and not adjustable. At this point you may as well take it to an amp tech and take your lumps, or else you'll end up spending a ton of money trying to find the problem yourself.

If you're the least bit unsure, do not go mucking about inside your amplifier in search of loose connections or a bad soldering joint. The voltages present even when the amp has been turned off for awhile can kill you.

If replacing the tubes didn't do the trick, it's likely that the problem is beyond that which the average gearhead could solve. Taking it to a tech is the easiest -- and safest -- way.

wr, Never said that about 65 reissues, don't be putting words in my mouth. Only original BF and SF amps never fail LOL.
rdepa, It's very important to get the bias checked. If you bought the amp new, it should still be under warranty. It could be a pair of power tubes or even possibly the power supply caps. The tubes should be replaced as a quad set. Just don't get mad and trade it in on a HRD series amp and you'll be fine. Just kidding.

Hi Rdepa, and welcome to the forum. Just wondering if the low volume condition happened all of a sudden ? The vib channel has an extra gain stage, and in some amps I've found quite a difference in volume between the two channels. In one of my old Fender amps , the difference is almost two numbers up on the volume control, to match the vib channel's volume. But if you are concerned, by all means, take it in and have a tech check it out. Sounds like you're thinking about the power tubes, so this might be a good opportunity to have both jobs done at one time. And if a fault is found in the normal channel, you should get a break on the bench time. Just a word about the power tubes, if they are still quiet and strong, you should be able to get 1000 hours out of them before replacement. Art

Thanx all. Yea, I already plan to take the beast in. I'm well aware of the dangers inside the box w/power off. My 5 year warrant was up in January so it's time for the electronic doctor. I'll post the findings when I get it back.
