Eminence Wizard, for "in your face" louder than stock or the Jensen volume, but you can turn down and get more headroom with good low end.

The last thing that you want to replace is the speaker. If you want to know why go here: http://home.comcast.net/~machrone/bluesjunior.htm Bill M is the MAN when it comes to Blues Jr. mods. I've done them all on mine and it'll blow anything comprable out of the water. The speaker, however, remains stock.

It was my experience that changing out the stock speaker - in favour of a Celestion V30 - made such a massive difference that I've not felt the need for any further modifications. I'm always amazed the Fender chose to hobble such a great little amp with such a naff driver..

Me too, my new BJ came with a Jensen P12R and I replaced it with a Texas Heat. The difference was a massive night and day revelation. The P12R must be the worst speaker Fender ever put in a Blues Junior.

Cheers,

Snowy

This may be true, however the 40W Blues Deluxe was outfitted with the same speaker and became an instant classic.
The main problem with the Blues Jr. is that it burns up the power tubes because they are biased too hot and changing the driver won't rectify this problem. The speaker which you replaced the stock speaker with has pronounced top end. This addresses the other problem in the preamp section on the BJ, namely the mids pot. You could've grounded the mids pot from the 5-1 setting and sucked ALL of the mids out of the speaker.. and saved $150. The filter capacitor needed tightening up and the 47mf was replaced with a 100mf and so long, flubby bottom-end! Mine sounds like my friends' old Princeton Reverb already. But now you guys have me wondering if I can bankroll a Celestion G12 Blue...

Exactly! IMO, A speaker and tube changes can make a dramatic change in tone. No disrespect to BillM intended, but he sells mods. He's not a speaker dealer. He'd rather see you either buy his mods or better yet let him mod them for even more cash. I'd rather have an amp "blow anything comparable out of the water' without modding except maybe a tube or speaker change. That would mean buying a better quality amp that didn't need to be modded to sound good. I know a lot of guys who play Blues Jr's who don't cook tubes every other week. They usually have more problems with tube rattle. EL84's run hot. They run pretty hot in my Rebel too. All this stuff is very subjective. It's Bills opinion. It's what he hears with his ears not mine or yours. What you plug into the front of the amp has a lot to do with what comes out of the amp too. He a smart guy and he has some good stuff. I just don't agree with some of it. When the EL84's are red plating, then you have a problem. Best advise, be your own judge. Don't think somethings wrong with your amp because some "amp guru" told you so.

In my case, replacing the P12R speaker which sounded horrible in the Junior, was an easy way to significantly change the sound of the amp to my liking without resorting to a soldering iron.

I find the 5 year warranty is also a strong barrier for me to take to the amp with a soldering iron, especially if I can get what I like to hear by swapping a speaker out and keeping the original speaker safely stored away.

Cheers,

Snowy

I'll tell you what Snowy, I'm glad I didn't mod my HRDlx when I had it. It went south in just a couple of months and got worse from there. The 5 year warranty got a serious workout. All different things at different times. Had nothing to do with my techs work. One thing my tech told me was modding HRD series amps including the Blues DLX and Jr was one of the reason he saw so many. The PCB's are pretty fragile single sided boards and the traces lift very easily. If you don't catch a lifted trace you amp will go down more sooner than later. My tech hates them.

Hey invader.

I have one of the tweed Blues Juniors that came stock with a Jensen speaker. The only thing I have done to the amp is retubed it with matched JJ tubes.

Also have a Jensen in my Limited Edition Maple Hot Rod Deluxe (also re-tubed with JJs).

For my ears, the Jensens sound just fine. The re-tube made all the difference on the amps for me. Especially on the HRDlx -- bringing one tube (V2) down to a 12DW7 made all the difference in the world.

I desperately wanted to put a Celestion Blue into my BJ and was prepared to pay the cost. Unfortunately, the Blue is too big for the cabinet - you need to find another 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch. It's just too tight in there..
