Hi guys and gals,

I'm just gettin' into electric guitars and I was wondering what a good amp is that would match the quality of the Fender Deluxe Players Strat model 0133000327. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Ivy

If you only want to buy a Fender amp once and have a reliable, well built /designed amp I'd recommend a 65 Deluxe Reverb Reissue. If you want more power, go with either a Super Reverb Reissue or a 59 Bassman Reissue.
Don't cheap out on an amp. It's not worth all the headaches involved. Lower end tube amps just aren't worth the aggravation.

In the other camps, Egnater, Peavey and Vox make some nice stuff as well as Marshall and Orange.

Any amp will work with any guitar. Need more info.

To help narrow down choices:
What is your budget???
Where do you do most of your playing???
What style of music do you play???
Are you in a band, and if so what size gigs do you play???

Keep in mind if you live in an apartment or just a bedroom player a big tube amp (Bassman, Super Reverb, etc) will get you evicted! It's a waste of money to get a big amp and only be able to turn it up to 1 on the dial. Might as well get a nice smaller tube amp or solid state that you can turn up and let it breathe.

Agreed, but even a low-wattage tube amp without a master volume is often too much for bedroom playing. To get power amp saturation from a five watt amp requires turning it up quite loud. One possibility is something along the lines of the Vox AC-4. It's a 4-watt tube combo that is switchable between 4, 1 and 0.1 watts. It's perfect for small gigs if you have a decent PA system, yet will provide great sound at bedroom levels too. Another great amp that is crafted around the same principles is the Bugera V5. It's inexpensive, but it comes with some neat features: a master volume control, a tone circuit, and onboard digital reverb that sounds pretty good. A friend of mine just got one, and you can get a pleasing array of tones from it without much tweaking.

It makes infinitely more sense, economically, to grow into an amp than to grow out of one.

Spring for a Princeton Reverb re-issue. It's the ultimate "porch weasel" yet still toneful enough and powerful enough for garage jams and light gig work.

There is not much quality in the $200 range for amps. If you can stretch it to $300 things really open up in the used amp range - Fender Blues Junior or Peavey Classic 30 are the first that come to mind for very popular medium power tube amps. Or the two low power tube amps suggested by Vulkan are inexpensive when bought new and are definately worth checking out.

I can't comment on solid state or digital modelling amps, but that might be the route you will have to go if you are limited to $200. Nothing wrong with that, you gotta have an amp for your Strat! :D

Your budget is going to restrict what you can buy. Getting into a tube amp will be almost impossible in that price range. You could look at solid state amps and find something in your price range. Take a look at the Fender G-dec series. Low cost and it's a great learning amp. Line 6 also makes some affordable amps in your price range as do many other brands. Go to a guitar store or two and try out as many amps both new and used in your price range. Pick the one you like the best. Good luck and keep us posted.

If you only have $200, you should save up a bit more and do like Retroverbial says and go with a Princeton. They sound great. You spent money on a nice guitar, why make it sound like cheap one? Look in the used market too. I wouldn't recommend a new Hot Rod series amp let alone a used one. For another hundred or so you can pick up a vintage Silverface Champ. I take my 74 Champ to lower volume living room blues jams all the time. It's only 6 watts and sounds great we have a drummer with a small drum kit and it gets over just fine. If there's an aggressive drummer it won't get over.

You've got a nice new guitar and $200 burning a hole in your pocket for an amp. I don't imagine you'll want to wait and save much longer. I'd make sure to get something loud enough to keep up with an aggressive drummer. Maybe it'll be solid state, and maybe it won't have that perfect sound, but this won't be the only amp you ever buy, and you might find yourself needing the volume before you can afford the next one. You can always turn down for practicing at home.

If you're playing at home with your brother (ie. in the living room or garage) and don't plan on playing gigs etc. then I'd go with a Vibro-Champ XD. That amp will be plenty loud for that situation and will fill a small space with some great Fender tones and plenty of Blues/Rock tones to play with. It will get you a nicer tone in your situation than a bigger amp will.

It's an amp you can then always keep for home playing and recording, while serving the current purpose very well.

Later on, if you decided to get together with a drummer/band etc. you could then opt for a larger amp like a Deluxe Reverb, and you will have both situations covered perfectly.

Cheers,

Snowy.

Between me Snowy, you've got advice from both ends of the spectrum :?.

Which is right? I suppose it depends on how soon you think you'll be able to splurge for that next amp.

Yeah, like Mutthound says, it's hard to give good advice, it really depends on what his plans are as much as the current playing/financial situation. I only suggested the Vibro because he can always keep it for home use, no matter where his playing takes him in the future.

A lot of this is personal choice/taste, but I've always like the sound of a smaller amp wound up a bit at home, rather than a bigger amp on 2, but that's just my mileage.

Plus I've always figured that even when playing in a gigging band I still spend more time practicing at home than playing a 3 hour gig, so the little amp was valuable to me, the larger gigging amp did 5% of the total playing duties.

Cheers,

Snowy

+1 on the Bugera Vintage 5. I use one. It's got the attenuator down to 0.1 watts and takes headphones as well. A great little amp with good sound and plenty of snot. 8)
