I recently bought a Super Champ XD and love it. However, I'd love to get an external cab (don't want to swap out the original speaker). Could this amp power the hot rod 1x12 cab (80w max @ 8 ohms)? Or does anyone know of an alternative. Thanks!

I would head over to your local music store and try out a 1x12 cab connected to a Super Champ to see if the 15 watts of tube power will push the extra speaker. Try it out before you buy something. I added a Fender Deluxe 1x12 speaker cab to my Fender Deluxe Reissue and it sound great. That amp is 22 watts so I am thinking that a 1x12 would also work for you. (The DRRI has enough power to easily push a 4x12 speaker cab too.)

As long as the impedance is what's recommended, 15 watts will have no problem pushing the extra speaker. You can run a 4x12 if you want to. I run two 112 cabs with a 20 watt amp and have used it with a 4x12 Marshall cab.. I also can hook up my 3 watt SS Pignose or my little 1 watt home built SS amp to the same two 112 cabs. No Problem.

So if I make sure the output is 8 ohms, I'm okay? What is the best way to get some extra volume? Thanks in advance! P

The more speakers you run, the more air you'll move and the more perceived volume you'll have. Speaker efficiency is really important too. The Celestion speakers in the HRD cab are nice. You can always run a Bandmaster cabinet with two 12's. It will still be a 15 watt amp. If you want more volume, I'd get a more powerful amp in the 20-30 watt range.

I'm not a huge fan of the SCXD or the Vibro Champ XD. A guy I play in a band with on a regular basis leaves one at the rehearsal space. He runs the effects and it drives me nuts. It just sounds boxy and the effects sound cheesy to me. Thing is he loves it, and it's his and that's what's really important. I wouldn't care if he didn't like my amp as long as I liked it. I think going to an external cab would be a great move for you. It will really open up the tone. When a tube change comes around for you, I'd skip the Groove Tubes and get a set of JJ's. Just my opinion YMMV.

+1

I built this little Princeton piggyback conversion around a small-box Dual Showman enclosure (vertically-oriented) with a pair of parallel-wired 16Ω JBL K120s. The 12-watt Princeton really roars now!

Sorta resembles a SF "mini" Dual Showman.
