Can anyone tell me, in general terms, the differences in tonal qualities between a 10" and 12" speaker, and specifically how those differences play out between a 65 Princeton Reverb Reissue and the Deluxe Reverb Reissue. Thanks.

It depends entirely on the amp driving the speakers, but to my ears 12s seem to deliver a more full, rounded tone, while 10s are punchy and emphasize the midrange. My rig uses both in combination -- 1x12" and 1x10" -- and sounds great as a result.

Play lots of speakers through plenty of amps and see what you like.

10's also have a tighter bottom end and are more focused. I like them a lot.

Much of either speaker's sonic characteristics is derived from the type of enclosure and the composition of that enclosure. As well, the brand of speaker and its construction are major contributory factors. That said, let your ears make the final judgment.

How true. Open back closed back etc. Both my Egnater 112 cabs are closed back and ported with Celestion Custom Elite 80's. They're very focused and directional. It took a little while for the Celestion's to break in. Most of my amps either had Jenson, Oxford or Utah speakers. Pretty nice. One of the fattest sounding 2x12 cabs I ever owned was from a 73 Bandmaster. Two 12's in a giant cab. Wish I still had it. It was just rough to haul around.

Indeed, they are a PITA to schlep around. I've taken to building small-box Showman cabs (24" x 36" x 11½") configured for 2 x 12. They actually sound better than the original big-box types since there is less interior volume which rolls off some of the bass response and makes them significantly punchier for guitar (ie: less "boomy").

I've gone through a few Fender amps, but my favourite is unequivocally the Pro Jr. I just love the sound of that amp driving the 10" speaker. On a couple of occasions I've played it through 1x12" and 4x12" cabs, but it's never the same. What I'd like to get is a 2x10" cab for the thing: make it seem louder, and get a little more dispersion of sound.
