G'day...

Anyone on here from Australia ever purchased JJ tubes and put them into their Blues Junior?

How much did it cost you all up and did they make a significant tonal difference other than the GT's..

Cheers.

I spoke with an amp tech today and he states the following.

He quoted me $180 AUD to fit 2x JJ power tubes which also included fitting of a cooling fan on the amp for the power tubes.

Apparently if you drive the BJ at high levels to get that break up for a creamy blues sound too often, the end result is that the tubes get that hot they fry the board in the amp. Then it's big big problems.
Hence that is why he fits the cooling fan to prevent that big big problem.

Hmm I haven't heard of this before, what do you think?

G'day Mate,
No disrespect for your amp tech intended here, but you can pick up a matched pair of JJ's for about $40 delivered. You can plug them in yourself and then get the bias checked. If it's too hot then what your tech should really do with the bias is change the required resister to cool it as detailed on Bilm's website, if he is a Fender Authorised repair person your warranty should be OK with the understanding that the new tubes needed a rebias to prevent heat damage, but you can ask about that at the time.

The other option, though it will void the warranty is to do the Billm adjustable bias mod and have the amp tech set it properly.

Here's an example for the JJ's. (I've bought a speaker off this guy, he is the real deal - check his feedback!)

Hope that helps you out.

Cheers,

I got a FULL set of JJs from Eurotubes for $50 ish dollars just a few weeks ago.

Also, you can't change the bias on a stock BJ because there is no adjustment. The court of public opinion hold that the bias settings on the stock BJ are "too hot", but I have not heard of anyone putting a cooling fan in before?

I looked over Bill's mod page and didn't find any mention of a fan mod. There is a bias mod that allows the bias to be adjustable.
