My new amp has three speaker line out jacks. According to the instruction manual, I have the following options:

Jack #1. run the internal 16Ω speaker.
Jack #2. run 1 8Ω speaker or 2 16Ω speakers (minus the internal speaker).
Jack #3. run 1 8Ω speaker (minus the internal speaker).

I cant get my brain around this. Does this mean that if I remove the 16Ω internal speaker and replace it with a more efficient 8 Ω speaker plugged into the #3 8Ω jack, I can safely run a single 8Ω speaker? In other words... would this meet the #2 or #3 Ω load requirement? If that's possible, how do they pull it off?

An impedance selector switch that is activated when a speaker cable is plugged into a jack, changing the signal strength to a voltage divider of power capacitors. Similar to the manual selector switch on an attenuator.

Many thanks!!!

I'm running an 8Ω JENSEN C12N in the amplifier through the #3 port. I've run the amp at a decent volume for about 3.5 hours with NO ill effects (yet). I assume that this is safe,

I think you'll be safe, you're only following manufacturer's recommendations anyway so rock on. 3.5 hours, that's a lot of Yardbirds material :)

On the tube amps I've seen, the impedance select switch changes the output transformer tap. If you have different jacks with different impedence ratings, the jacks have make/break switches to tie you to the correct o/t tap.
