After playing with the 12AU-7 in V3 this weekend, I offer the following impression:

The 12AU-7 is a much lower gain tube than the 12AX-7, so the preamp signal doesn't get as much boost as the stock arrangement. This allows the the sensitivity of the pot to be reduced, giving the desired (by me anyway) effect of having more control over lower volume settings.

It appears that the lower preamp gain gives a greater range on the volume, master, and drive controls as well, i.e. takes more turn of the pot to get the same effect. In my case this is the desired effect of the mod, but it does reorder your thinking on how to set the amp like you want it based on previous experience.

This being said, the amp appears to go into power tube compression (break up) at lower overall volumes. I don't care for heavy preamp distortion as I think it sounds too "fizzy", so this is a major benefit for me. This is why I bought the Blues Deluxe instead of the Hot Rod Deluxe; "more drive" has little appeal to me. This is a major benefit for those who like this tone. This is the sound I am looking for what I play. I like low powered amps for this reason.

I can't say the overall volume is more or less; I think it is about the same, but I had no way to compare SPL from the before and after changeout.

Overall, I have a very favorable impression of this change. It accomplishes exactly what I was looking for and is about as easy a mod as one will ever perform.

The summary:
1. If you like power tube compression (breakup) this is a good mod.
2. If you want more fine tuning control of volume, master, and drive, this will be a good solution.
3. If you like the preamp gain sound, this may not be your best mod unless number two above is the main factor you are addressing. As with all mods personal taste and application are determining factors.

I agree with your assessment. Well said.

It does produce quite a bit of compression. It would be especially good for chicken pickin.

put an e.c. strat in front of it and hold on. mine works great with my bdri. i don't have any use for heavy or fizzy distortion. i like clarity with volume control for overdrive. my bdri with the mods i did to it suits my needs. glad to see you found a sound you like too.

Forums are great! Thanks to all for the advice and suggestions. This was a completely successful change.

In fact, I think it is so good on the BDRI, Fender should look into this as a standard configuration. Maybe, not so much on the HRD, but definitley for the BDRI. That way the two amps are more distinguishable and better suited for different playing styles.

I think that you are all missing the obvious. Plug your guitar into input 2. That has a natural -6db attenuation.

I think that will cure your problem.
