It's gear. How many times do you think I heard my 72 Strat is junk because it's a 70's Strat? I don't care. It's mine and I like it. I'm not saying "GG's gear is junk". I'm saying I don't like HRD amps and I wish someone clued me in before I bought a HRDlx and was tortured by it's serious design flaws. Mine was junk so I got rid of. I didn't get upset because someone someone said it was junk, I got upset because someone didn't.

Reading posts like, What's wrong with my BJ, BDri or HRD___ on almost a daily basis gets tiring too but I still try to help solve a problem if I can. I don't lecture the person who bought the amp about what he bought either. I know how to repair a lot of things on them and I even personally email people Juston Holton's Unofficial Hot Rod Deluxe site files. Yes there was a whole lengthy site on how to repair the the HRD series amps that points out all the flaws and how to repair them. I have all the files. Serious stuff from the cheesy plastic jacks to the cold solder joints on the tube sockets.

I'd watch the "jihad" comments. It's defined as "a holy war waged by Muslims against infidels". I don't think it applies here. You never know who you may be insulting.

+1

I remember A/B-ing a new HRDlx against an equally-new DRRI at Guitar Circus and thinking "geez, this DR is only 22 watts but with 40 watts I could actually gig with the HRD.". So that's what I walked out with. Big mistake. It's the only new amp I ever dumped -- it "expired" several times before its warranty so I unloaded it then went back and bought the DRRI that I should've bought in the first place.

YMMV

I gig with a 20 watt amp all the time. My Egnater Rebel 20 is great. I have two 112 cabs just in case buy I usually only need one. My HRDlx failed lots of times three of them on stage none of the three was tube related. The tube failure happened 3 weeks into it. I don't care what an amp sounds like, if it's unreliable it goes.

You two had bad luck, so you bought an $850 amp and a $1000 amp. Some people have only $499 to invest, and are happy to have a Blues Jr. A lot of people love these amps and have good reliability. I also remember at least two extremely chapped arses who felt insulted by comments. 63, your "crusade" against Fender has collateral damage. GG

Look, I've been a Fender guy since 1964. I've owned tons of Fender amps and the HRDlx was the most unreliable amp I've ever owned. I paid something like $700 for it. It wasn't a $150 Champ 600. I expected a lot more for my money besides headaches. Look around on other forums. I'm not alone on this. You know how I am, don't read my posts. Very few people take my equipments posts personally. You can do a lot better for the money. A used DRRI goes for around $600. it sounds better, is built better and is a lot more reliable. I'm not the only one on your so called crusade. I'm a pissed off customer and deserved a better product. If your amp breaks, I'll be happy to try and figure out the problem and help if I can. It's the way I am. Just ank anyone who knows me om the forum.

OK. Peace. GG

PS - A used DRRI sold at a nearby store recently for $1000. Vintage.

PSS - Weren't you eight years old in 1964? You started early. (I'm a fan.)

No "crusade" here either -- I love Fender amps. And here's a list of those I've owned or currently own, going back to 1966......

'65 Deluxe (no "Reverb", AB763, Oxford ceramic, second owner)
'59 Bassman (5F6-A, Jensen alnico, umpteenth owner)
'64 Concert (AB763, Oxford alnico, third owner)
'67 Super Reverb (SF drip-edge, AB763, CTS alnico, purchased new)
'68 Dual Showman (AB763, JBL D130F, second owner)
'66 Vibro Champ (AA764, Jensen ceramic, third owner)
'69 Twin Reverb (AC568, Utah ceramic, second owner)
'67 Bassman (AA165, CTS ceramic, second owner)
'68 Bandmaster (AB763, Oxford ceramic, second owner)
'69 Pro Reverb (AA1069, Utah ceramic, purchased new)
'67 Twin Reverb (AB763, Jensen ceramic, third owner)
'66 Vibrolux Reverb (AA864, Oxford alnico, umpteenth owner)
'73 Twin Reverb (M/V, JBL D120F, third owner)
'78 Twin Reverb (P/P, M/V, JBL D120F, purchased new)
'68 Princeton Reverb (AA964, Utah ceramic, third owner)
'87 Sidekick Switcher (Eminence ceramic, purchased new)
'99 Twin Reverb ('65 re-issue, Eminence ceramic, second owner)
'99 Stage 100 DSP w/matching DT-112 extension cab (Celestion ceramic, second owner)
'04 Hot Rod Deluxe (Eminence ceramic, purchased new)
'67 Bandmaster (SF drip-edge, AB763, unknown original speakers, second owner)
'02 Deluxe Reverb ('65 re-issue, Eminence ceramic, second owner)
'80 Princeton (no "Reverb", Oxford ceramic, umpteenth owner)
'66 Bandmaster (mated to '65 Dual Showman cab, JBL D130F, umpteenth owner)
'65 Princeton Reverb (AA764, Quam ceramic, third owner)
'68 Bandmaster (SF drip-edge, AB763, head only, umpteenth owner, conversion to 2 x 10 combo)
'67 Showman (SF drip-edge, AB763, converted to BF, head only, umpteenth owner)

I currently have ten Fender amps in my "stable" -- I'm doubtful that few here on this or any other forum can match that. And with an FCC 1st Class Radio & Telephone Technician License (with radar endorsement) I know a wee bit more about electronics than the average guitar and amp junkie. Supro is "old school" too and he knows his stuff......we didn't have isolated cases of "bad luck" with our HRDlx's. How many chronic problems exist with vintage BF and SF Fender amps, and how many websites can you reference that offer "fixes" to remedy these alleged problems?

My first amp was a 1964 Vibrolux Reverb. I actually didn't start playing until 1966, I was 11. I'm 54 going on 55. The amp was used. Sorry, sometimes I lose my train of thought and forget to finish things. That's why I usually edit my posts. My first guitar was a 63 Supro Martinique which I still own.

I don't know where you're from because that will effect prices, but new DRRI Deluxe Reverb Reissue's go for anywhere from $600-750 Here in the States and are not considered vintage. New reissues are $999.00.

Retroverbial, that's quite a collection. Seriously. Some really fine amps too. I won't buy a newer Fender amp again. Once bitten twice shy. (Mott the Hoople Fan) I only had barely half that in Fender gear and consider that a lot. I love the Bandmasters and had a couple in my time. I'd like to get another one and not a vintage molested one, a real vintage one.

I only have my 76 Twin and 74 Champ now and I may be selling the Twin soon. I had a Sunn, a couple Ampegs and some small Dano's too. I just don't need it anymore. Currently I run an Egnater Rebel 20 and it's been rock solid, zero problems and sounds incredible. Not quite Fender, but not a one trick pony either.

Thanks, Supro.

The DRRI I ended up with was a used older model (La Brea built) that I paid six bills for. That was a couple of years ago so I'd opine that somewhere between $600 and $700 is a fair price in today's market.

I took a few 'side trips' during my four-decades long journey through "ampsville" -- Sunn, Marshall, even a Vox Super Beatle (!). But I always ended up back with the Fullerton stuff that I know and love.

I don't see much for me in the new amp models but the re-issues are still pretty solidly-built and as dependable as the originals. I gig regularly with a TRRI and it performs much like my one-owner '78, which I've beaten like the proverbial rented mule over the thirty-two years I've owned it. It's never failed me either.
