I find the volume on the HRDLx perfectly controllable at lower volumes. I have clean headroom and subtle control up to about 4, more if I plug into input 2. If I needed more clean volume than that I might have a problem. But so far so good.

I do have some other minor points of dissatisfaction with it, so I compared to a Blues Deluxe that I could've gotten for more or less a straight up trade. Now that amp got real loud, real fast. More so than the Hot Rod. Broke up sooner too, which is exactly the opposite of what I expected. I thought the Blues would be mellower than the Hot Rod.

Next step - retube with the "max headroom" option from Eurotubes.

That's what happened to my HRDlx too, B Man. The reverb just up and died on me. While sitting in my living room (I never took it out of the house). I broomed mine off as well, while the warranty was still in effect, then went back to GC and bought the DRRI I should've got in the first place.

I sold mine with roughly 7 months left on the warranty to appease the gear gods and have good Karma. :D I though the amp had potential, I was out of touch with new gear and never owned a tube amp with PCB construction.

I agree, that the HRD series deserves the slamming it gets and its sour reputation. I trusted Fender as I always did and got burned. Some folks have good luck with them. It shouldn't be the luck of the draw or whether you gig with it or move it around. I only had it out of the house a few times.
I also believe that a linear taper pot was used to give it an illusion of being a much louder amp than it really is.

Arjay, you should show the kiddies the rest of your collection and leave them drooling. :D
The thing is ,they can make a great amp with pcbs, just look at the vintage reissue.I have a drri and a 59 Bassman reissue from the 90s .Both are built like a tank. The 59 BMRI was bought a year ans a half ago .It was gigged pretty hard , you could tell.It has yet to give me any problems. To be honest my blues jr has seen some serious mileage without any problems, but you are right, it shouldnt be the luck of the draw.I also have a blues deluxe and dont play it much mainly because of the volume knob and I have better options tonewise and reliabilitywise.Arjay,I would like to see this collection bbrodie speaks of.

Yep, my Egnater has thick, double sided boards with plated eyelets with thick wide traces and no ribbon connectors. The HRD series are single boards with no plated eyelets and the traces are thin and lift easily.

A small sample, Budglo......

I've had really outstanding luck with both of the re-issues I own (TRRI, DRRI). Aside from a speaker change to JBLs and re-tubing, they haven't needed a thing. Both were secondary-market purchases built in the mid-90's and I haven't had so much as a hiccup with either of them. I demand a lot from an amp and -- like their Fullerton bretheren before them -- they deliver. I couldn't rightly ask for more.

 OMG!That is quite a sampling.I have had really good luck so far.I just got rid of a 75 super reverb silverface .Just needed something smaller and I wasnt about to lug it around to gigs.I ended up buying a ddri at supros recommendation and found I really like the 6v6 "bloom".My favorite for sure .Eventually I would like to get a 57 deluxe clone or maybe try to build one myself.I really like Fender amps ,mainly because of their tone and they have a great reputation.Next on my radar is a friend has a 64 vibrolux she is considering getting rid of.Its all original except for one of the speakers has been replaced .
