We're talking a HRDlx here. There isn't an efficient anything in that amp. :D

I hear a lot of bad talk about the hot rod deluxe, but I have one and LOVE it. I am getting great SRV and Hendrix tones, and with a distortion box I get great AC/DC, Zep, etc tones.

SRV and Hendrix out of the HRDlx? I knew I should have kept mine.

A lot of that type of tone comes from the player's hands and technique. As an example, Anthony Stauffer, the guy who runs the "Stevie Snacks" website demonstrates this in most of his lessons where he uses a bone stock Blues Junior to obtain a nice SRV type tone.

Conversely, a player without the correct string attack, touch, muting and damping techniques won't even get close to that tone through a $4000 Fender amp.

Cheers,

Snowy

(ey! shut ya trap! can't r&r - don't f_kin come! great amp, unique sound that turns me on. don't like it - noone here gives a damn about it. wanna make someone feel bad or pissed off? why? your tiny banana won't grow any bigger because of that and it won't make ya a better playa. so show respect, mate! i wonder what music, where, how long and on what equipment d'you play).

 about the loudness. there are 3 label types (read grades) of GT 6l6s tubes. red will giva ya least amont of breakup and biggest headroom, whites are middle and the blue ones will break up earliest, also don't forget about biasing. you can read more about it in Justin Holton's HRD Unofficial User's Manual that I can e-mail to ya. you can also get a special set of 6v6 tubes instead of 6l6s - it'll make the amp a bit less loud too. but i like it loud! that's why i bought it :) cool clean, angry fuzz, loud enough on average stage, small and light enough for touring, 3 channels (no comments please) and that a bit strange reverb that i love - f__k pedalboards, people, used to carry a bunch of pedals, but than just went with this amp that chose among many others, cause it just sounds unusual and so me - it's way more inspiring to see some beauty's eyes in the crowd, than a knob on some pedal

I have to agree with you, I easily got SRV and Hendrix type tones, all you have to do is play with the EQ. I've had mine for 7 years without any problems.

I suggest you watch not only the language, but the personal attacks. :? Don't get your panties in a bunch because I don't agree with you.
I've been playing guitar for 40+ years 20 some of it professionally. I still have my 76 Twin and 74 Champ, I'm semi retired and play for fun now and have owned rented and borrowed more equipment than I care to mention including owning a HRDlx. Talk about respect mate, nobody here said anything personal about anybody.

The HRD series amps ARE the low end of the totem pole in build quality, design and tone in the Fender camp. Why do most people dump the tubes and changes the speaker and mod the snot out of them? Mine was THE most unreliable amp I've ever owned ever.

If you guys think you're nailing SRV's or Hendrix's tone, you never saw them live. The guy from Stevie Snacks is talented, but doesn't come anywhere close to SRV's live tone. Comparing what you hear through you stereo or computer speakers is nothing like a live tone. Comparing a HRDlx to the fury of a wall of 100 watt Marshall stacks a Fuzz Face, Univibe etc is laughable.

Stevie didn't use a wall of Marshalls when playing acoustic guitar, but guess what, he still got his own SRV tone within the boundaries of the tools at hand!

Saying you need a wall of Marshalls to get SRV tone is the same as saying he wasn't nailing his own sound anytime he played through a 1x12 combo and didn't have the Marshalls handy.

There's a lot of very, very talented people, people you'll never hear about, out there playing in bands and using the HRDdlx all around the world, and getting great sounds out of it.

Some people do sound like crap, no matter what amp they play through, or how much they spend on gear, but nobody should set their own limitations as boundaries for what others can and can't do with a given piece of equipment and an extra dose of talent.

Cheers,

Snowy.

Pay no mind to those who have been scorned by the HRDLX. I'm sure it has been good to some and not so good to others. It is only one man's opinion who makes this same opinion known ... just about every day.
Me, I can tell you that I have been playing for 40 yrs (also every day) but I'd actually rather be playing than posting for my 1 millionth time. So off I go.

I wasn't implying Stevie did. Stevie used a lot of different amps. Hendrix did use Marshall on stage and sometimes Twins in the studio as well as Showman amps. To imply someone is "nailing" anyone else's tone is just ridiculous especially with a mediocre amp . There's a lot of Strats and hats around. Most are just really poor imitations. I saw Stevie many times way back. Sometimes he sounded great other times not so great.
