I think it depends on your point of view; Dr. Z may be considered boutique by some, not by others.

Compared to Mesa, it's a boutique amp maker. Compared to Simple amps, it's a full-fledged operation.
FYI - Simple Amps is no joke - friend at work just got one and it sounds sick. The green tolex is awesome as well...

Even within groups - think of the Fender Custom shop - you could argue that that is a boutique company within the largest amp company around.

IMHO, while Dr. Z may not be a boutique amp shop, Mesa has graduated from boutique to the bigger leagues, but again, it's all on perspective/pov.

I hope that I didn't give anybody the idea that "Simple Amps" are not a good product. I have not heard one but remember NAMM photos of their display. The label "Boutique" at this point in the amp. world is, or should be a dead word. Due to the competition between amp makers: I believe almost all manufacturers have raised the bar. The availability of 1 watt and 1/4 watt amps, 5 watt class A practice amps, decent amp modeling, decent built in effects, built in attenuators, all at a very low cost.

No, no, wasn't directing that comment at you - it's just that with a name like Simple Amps - if you haven't heard of them or heard their amps, it's a name that's sure to cause a snicker.

Very good amps; my friend's 6V6-based one sounds great. he also found Magic Amps, another small company that makes several different amp styles, including their take on Page's Supro amp.

Thanks for the directions to "Magic Amps". I always like to check out another builder. One thing about being an amp enthusiast, I never get tired of looking at new amps. "Magic" is unique in that they nail the old "Supro Sound". Some years back Some years ago I found a publication that covered The NAMM Show products. This heavy duty magazine covered every piece of music gear in the world. I have never found this again. I think it is a yearly publication. If you know of any similar publication, please let me know.

Hi Alun here from the UK

I went for the cheaper option.

Looked on E Bay and bought a Beano Booster ( no more than £25.00 ) less than $20.00 for you.

It works an absolute treat, does exactly what it says on the can and allows you to crank up your amp and play at a reasonable volume - got some fantastic sounds out of this - Really good for the vintage blues type stuff.

If you are considering paying hundreds and hundreds of dollars just check this out first, you might like it.

Hello Alan from The U.K. It's great to get ideas from folks all over the world! I wonder if the name "Beano" comes from that John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers 60's album? Guess so. I have bought an "Omnisonic" Volume Control Box that runs thru the effects loop and lowers overall volume. It doesn't go between the output and speaker like an attenuator. I will look up the Beano. Paul D.

Absolutely right with the Beano quote. I play in a band called Junkyard Preachers and use a Fender 40 w Blues deluxe with a strta and a musicman axis. ( check out Mojo Working on YouTube to get an idea of the sound using the Beano Boost). Mine is the guitar sound that you will hear at the intro.

On another note, I also play in a rock band and use the more drive chanel when playing solos. I just find that it is just not loud enough.

I was looking at buying a volume pedal? or a clean boost? what do you think? what would do the best job?

Regads

Alun

So your 40 watt Fender Blues Deluxe is not loud enough when using the "More Drive" channel during a solo. I think that you need a 60 watt amp. If you need just a slight 'boost', there are ways. Take your amp to a well stocked store & give several pedals a try. Perhaps they would give you a booth for playing wide open. Your amp all ready has a preamp so you don't want to push that fender too hard or it will fry. Good Luck Alan.

If 40 watts doesn't do it everyone either needs to turn it down or you need a more efficient speaker. My HRDlx always had a hard time cutting the mix. The stock speakers in these things are horrible.
