hey guys I have discovered recently that one of my favorite tones I have come across is my twin breaking up, I think the current one I am using does so because the tubes may be older, with humbuckers it sets it at 6 and be ten it gets a little more breakup.

I love the sound much, just enough crunch for me, so subtle and the best with my pedals.

the problem is it is loud, but like I said (I think the tubes are old cause I almost deal with the volume)

The simplest cheapest thing to do would be pull the outer 2 tubes, which I have read about, if I had a tech do this and do bias etc.... would it be safe?

yellowjackets...... they are el34/84s would that change the breakup tone I dig?

And an attenuator, most expensive and really wouldn't have a use for it besides with my twin...

If you wanted a 20-watt amp, perhaps you should've just bought a DRRI in the first place.

The simplest and cheapest way to go would be for you, your bandmembers, and everyone in the audience to wear earplugs while you play your Twin on 10

I think going the route of pulling the outside two tubes would be the best bet. I haven't looked at the prices of Yellowjackets or attenuators lately until now and wow!, you could just get a lesser wattage amp for the price of those gadgets. Attnuators and Yellowjackets are safe when used properly, but will change your tone. Get a DRRI or something similar for playing at home or smaller places and keep the Twin for playing stadiums.

What won't really work:
1. Pulling your outside tubes will help, but you'll still be very loud before you get breakup. Too loud for most people. Most of Fender's 40 watt 6L6 amps are loud but have better breakup characteristics at lower volume. Twin Reverbs are the ultimate Fender clean, but that utralinearity means your breakup comes at volume, even with half the power tubes.

2. Yellowjackets - if you use them, you're totally changing the tone of your amp. You will lose the sound of your Fender Twin's 6L6 power tube. You may like the tone you get, but it certainly won't be a Twin.

What will work and retain most of your tone:
1. THD hotplate, Dr. Z Airbrake, - speaker attenuators will let you crank up your 6L6 power tubes for power tube distortion, but you can limit the speaker volume. This will keep everyone's ears from bleeding. Least invasive (connect speakers to one side and a speaker cable to the other that connects to the amp's speaker out), and with a twist of a knob, you're back at stock.

2. Different speakers - Twin Reverbs come with speakers with little to no breakup until your ears are bleeding from the volume. Put a different speaker in there and you can get breakup earlier without the volume. You may have a tonal shift you're happy with, or it may sacrifice some of your cleans for crunch.

Good luck experimenting.

+1 That's why mine sits in the closet. The Egnater is 20watts and 16lbs and comes with a carrying bag. :D It's really rare that I ever need the power of my Twin.

OK but what about the cabinet(s) for the Egnater? 2 ea. 1X12 @ 31# ea. or one 2X12 @ 67#.

Sometimes we do illogical things....My BDRI @ around 45# and a little too loud to get breakup. So what do I do but get the extension cab- another 40# and perceived increase in vol. Looks cool and enhances tone, but   !!!!!! Go figure.

LOL.I have a blues deluxe too.The only way I was able to achieve breakup is with a pedal or if we were playing at a particularly loud bar and volume wasnt an issue.Same with my bassman. One of the reasons the bassman sits is if I cant play it to breakup, whats the point in playing it,cuz its not really meant for clean tones.Honestly I havent had a problem being heard with my drri yet.

This is why I bought a handtruck at Home Depot, which continues to be one of the best band equipment investments i've ever made.

Amps are heavy - so are PA speakers:
QSC HPR 122i's x2 - 60 lbs each
Mackie SRM450 x 3 - 51 lbs each
or, 273 lbs. of speakers I bring to each show we're doing our own PA, plus other cases, etc.

The convertible hand truck carries them all with ease.

Agree that a DRRI is usually a much better solution than a Twin Reverb, but figured I'd give some suggestions on what to try and what not to try with his Twin, since if he likes 6L6 breakup, it will be slightly different with the Deluxe. Deluxe Reverb breakup is great on its own and some may like it better.

Until "hithere" sells the Twin and gets a Deluxe Reverb, a handtruck will keep the chiropractor bills down and be a boon to the rest of the band. If your drummer has his drums in cases (including the hardware), this could be his new best friend.

I usually only need one 1x12 cab for the Egnater and the cabs are tiny. I can sling the head over my shoulder wear my guitar on my back with a gig bag and carry the cab in one trip. Yeah, I'm a pack mule. Still not as heavy as a Twin and it's not all in one piece. I have a heavy duty folding luggage cart if I feel lazy. If I'm at an open mic night, many times I can just use the head and someone else's cab. I know that's low but hey, I'm a geezer and lugged enough equipment in my lifetime. The issue really isn't just the weight, it's the loudness of the rig. If you're not willing to get a little exercise I'd do the acoustic thing and use the house PA system. :D
