I placed my order today and it'll be heading my way tomorrow. I've always wanted a Tweed BJ so I took the plunge. The one and only speaker option available in the Tweed was the Jensen P12R so I decided to give it a decent chance.

I know a lot of people don't like that speaker so I'm quite curious as to how it's going to sound. (My Custom Shop Woody Junior is 10 years old and retiring from dangerous duties outside the house).

I'm pretty excited about this little amp. 8)

Cheers,

Snowy. :D

I thought that the Tweed NOS Blues Junior has the Jensen C12N speaker, and the P12R is in the relic version?

That's what you guys in the US got, but here in Oz we got P12R's in the Tweed amps. Here's The fender Australia product profile for this amp.

Notice it says P12R in the specs below the amp: (I think the P12N reference is a typo). I checked this with the dealer and the P12R is what's fitted.

Congrats one the new amp! I too just got my Tweed BJ with the C12N speaker and it is a tone monster. With my undeveloped ear though, I probably would have like any of the speaker options in the BJ line.

Enjoy! The good thing is that you have a great looking amp and the speaker can be changed out rather inexpensively and easily if you want something different.

My next thing is the arrival of my JJ tube kit so I can retube the amp.

Also as a word of warning, my amp came to me with a bad preamp tube out of the box. Before you turn it on , make sure you verify the seating of the tubes.

Thanks guys,

I think they are are a great small amp and while I did consider a few other amps, I decided to stick with familiar territory and go with another BJ and the Tweed just looks so great. 8)

The Blues Jr. is a great little amp, mines blonde with the Eminence but it still sings sweetly.

I just got a brand new Tweed Blues Jr this week. It came to me direct shipped by the dealer from straight from Fender, and it has a Eminence speaker in it! and I live in Ohio. It sounds great, the magnet is huge, its got plenty Bass and midrange & highs . But from what Ive read a E. Cannibis Rex sounds super sweet in the Blues Jr's also when upgraded to it. I might decide to change out for the Rex someday, but for now the people down the street can hear me jamming loud and clear like it is. The Eminence speaker sounds real good stock like it comes though. I see why Fender uses it.

My amp arrived and I've given it a fair workout. I'll be changing this P12R speaker ASAP. Compared to my other BJ this one is very brittle and hard sounding. The breakup is quite harsh as well, actually the settings I use on my existing BJ were downright nasty sounding on the new one. (Billm pretty much describes this exact feature of this particular speaker on his website).

Mind you the other BJ is a Custom Shop jobby with a different speaker (the standard Fender Special Design) and also JJ Power tubes with RCA and Phillips preamp tubes, so there's a few other spices in the recipe there.

I'm going to put a Cannabis Rex speaker and JJ tubes in this new one and also swap in the RCA and Phillips preamp tubes and see how it goes.

Should be a different result I think!

Cheers,

Snowy

I recently had a 20% off coupon from Music 123 so I scored a brand new Blues Jr for $100 off the regular price. The stock condition was decent, but I had a Eminence Texas Heat speaker that I installed and it was a definate improvement due it it's being previously broken in. I also scored (for free) a full set of old Hammond Organ tubes that were made in Holland. That definately sweetened the tone. The little amp sings now!

Have you given the new speaker a chance to wear in Snowy? This can take a good 10 hours +

Guess I assumed that your Jensen speaker would be a much better bet than the stock 'Made for Fender by Emminence' in the standard BJ.

Hi adey,

I think the poor tone is more than speaker break in, the Jensen P12R is not known as a great match in the BJ.

Here's a quote about the P12R from Billm's website in his speaker guide:

"Jensen P12R
Fender chose this speaker for the Relic Blues Junior version. The Relic looks like it was made in the 1950s and lived a very hard life, complete with rust, stains, cat-clawed grille cloth, and tattered tweed. The P12R sounds like it’s from the 1950s too… kind of like an old table radio. This speaker makes the Blues Junior sound like a kazoo on steroids: squawky, nasal, thin, and weak. If you like that old-timey sound, you’ve found it. For the rest of us, yuk."

That pretty much sums up what I was hearing today.

I think Fender must have a big crate of these speakers that they keep fitting to the BJ amps they send overseas, because that's the only speaker choice we have in the Tweed BJ over here, yet in the US that speaker is not fitted to any BJ models except the "Relic".

Cheers,

Snowy.

Thanks for that bit of education Snowy, very interesting. From that description the speaker sounds worse than the "Emminence made for Fender" turkey Fender puts into the standard BJ..
