Exactly.

Lucky for me, I've been buying and accumulating pedals for the past 27 years and so my investment over time is more than the cost of a VM head, which puts me out of the targeted marketing group.

If only I hadn't sold that Univox Super Fuzz 20 years ago when I thought it wasn't any good...If you scroll down, I had the orange and blue one.

At the time, I got rid of it because I didn't think it would ever give me that Pete Townshend sound...

Bought a Guyatone TZ2 a few years ago, and while it's OK, I may still save up for an original or well-built clone to add on...

Exactly. The thing is I like effects that I can control the parameters on, not some pre-packaged bundle of effects of what some sales guy or marketing guy thinks are "cool".
The GDec is what it is. A practice tool. I have a 30 and shut the effects off. They're horrible. I just use the drums and the looper or run some live tracks through it to work out some new songs we've written. It never really leaves the music room.

But the good thing is, everyone's got to start somewhere. I'd rather have a G-Dec to start today than my old Hilgen Basso Grande I had back when I was learning.

Now if I can just get that and that 1x15 cab back on eBay...

I'm just curious...

I use my Super Champ XD for the home practice/demoing "convenience factor" (plug in a guitar, quickly dial in some effects when inspiration strikes). I've heard that some people don't like the sound of their pedals with the SCXD clean channel (it's DSP I believe). Personally, I don't use pedals with mine, but mostly because for my purposes there's no reason to.

How do pedals sound through the clean channel of the Deluxe VM? Is it a regular clean channel that reacts to pedals like other "non VM" amps?

(Obviously, I never got a chance to plug some stompboxes into it when I tried it at the store the other day.)

One of my big "tests" when I buy an amp is to bring my main guitar and a couple of stomp boxes that I built and modified from BYOC. I was originally excited about the Bandmaster VM. I didn't like the DSP effects and the amp sounded eh, with my pedals. It didn't seem to like my overdrive more than the others. That's how I wound up with the Egnater. The VM series didn't thrill me and I couldn't keep my HRDlx out of the shop so I pretty much gave up on the newer Fender amps. I already have a Twin and a SF Champ so for my needs the real deal Fender thing is covered. I never tried the SCXD with pedals, but one of the guys I jam with has a Vibro Champ XD so I'll give his a go next time I see him. It's still part of the VM series so it's probably similar.

This is directed at Tube schooled players. If "Nedorama" reads this: it stems from his suggestion of using the Mullard 12AT7 for the phase inverter position in a SCXD. I read some articles from Tube outlets on the differing specs between the 12AT-7 & 12AX-7. I am not really tube literate as far as specs go. What sort of effect would the 12AT7 have in place of the 12AX7 in the phase inverter position? Thanks.

Hi - on the tube recommendations, I've gotten all my tubes for my Fenders from Mike K at www.kcanostubes.com. Great guy, and he carries new and NOS, despite his website's name.

Mike is the one who's a big fan of the Mullard for the Phase inverter on older Fender amps; I'll pick one up shortly.

For an SXCD, I'd email Mike, explain what you're trying to get out of the amp and your budget, and let him recommend a few choices. He's been excellent to deal with for 10 years now for me. Mike may reco the Mullard, or there may be others.

Thanks for the link to that tube outlet. I want to find a DIY 1 watt (or thereabouts) tube amp. It's amazing how loud even 5 watts is. I may check out the Blackheart 1 watt head. Then, there is that little Vox with 1/4, 1, and 4 watts. That would be better for me. You should be able to dime a 1/4 watt amp anywhere. Getting back to tubes.....they do change an amps sound. I never knew that audiophiles were so careful with the tubes and caps in their stereos. I had to trip on those capacitors that are made of paper and oil. That's organic. Thanks, & Later.

What if all I am looking for is direct replacement tubes for my SCXD that are solely meant as backups in case the ones in there now go bad, and not as a mod. What specific model tubes am I looking for and where is a good place to get them?

Bathead,

Try this website. They have reviews and pricing for what would be an upgrade and also for direct replacement.

I was looking at the little Vox T.V. model low power tube amp. It has an attenuator that will switch the 4 watt output to 1 watt, or 1/4 watt. I would make this the next change for the SCXD. It would cost a little more, (I don't know how much) but would make it "apartment Ready".
