SCXD is sweet but if you want to go for something without tubes there's always the Frontman 65 and FM212 in your price range also. They rock.

Is this amp for home use or gigging? If you need gig volume, go with a used Peavey Classic 30, Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, Fender Blues Deluxe, Traynor YCV40, or Marshall Haze 40 and you might have cash leftover to buy a nice distortion pedal (for the harder hard rock stuff) and a round of beer. Buying used is the best way to stretch that $500 these days. All just my opinion of course....

I'd scratch the Hot Rod series if you do any serious gigging. For Fender tube amps I'd get a little more cash and get a used Deluxe Reverb Reissue, Traynor, Marshall Haze, Blackheart or probably your best bet in a tube amp in your price range is a Peavey Classic 30. The Frontman amps sound pretty good for a solid state amp. The SCXD is a better practice amp than a gigging amp. I would never consider gigging with one. For a little more you can get the Egnater Tweaker. I finally got to try one and it's a pretty serious amp for the money. Seems like it would be fine to gig with. Seems way louder than the SCXD and built way better too. I use an Egnater Rebel 20 but that's a bit out of your price range.

It comes in a head and halfstack or a combo. The combo is only about $80 out of your price range.

For 500 bucks , I would check ebay and craigslist. You can get a peavey classic 30 for about 300 to 350.If you watch the online music vendors you can get a drri for like 12 months or 18 months same as cash most times.I bought a new one in november for 810,about 100 more than a hotrod deluxe.Much nicer amp too.

I'm not certain what $500 will buy these days in terms of Fender's current amp offerings but I put this "micro-stack" together a couple of years ago for substantially less...

This is the "Stage 100 DSP" (from Fender's "Dyna-Touch" line of the mid-90s) with it's matching DT-112 extention cabinet. It's punchy, it's portable, and it eats Crate half-stacks and Randall 2 x 12 combos for lunch. I'm normally a vintage tube-amp player but for solid-state, these were not bad rigs at all. They turn up periodically on Ebay and C/L and are very under-appreciated IMO
