I am in the market for a new tube amp. I realy want the "Fender clean" with lot of headroom but most fenders are realy expensive. I have looked at the Hot Rod Deluxe and Blues Deluxe but those amps dont have alot of head room. I was looking online at a Dleuxe VM, can anyone tell me what those are like in terms of clean headroom?
Another amp I tried was a Marshall JCM600, any thoughts?

Any recomendations would be helpful, thanks.

:?: The Blues Deluxe has lots of clean headroom. In fact, since I've owned mine, I have looked for ways to get more OD at reasonable volumes...i.e. different tubes, an attenuator, yellow jackets, etc. This has been a fairly common point for discussion on this forum (How to get more OD fm the BDRI).

Have you played one, or are you going by what someone else has stated?

I am a jazz player so I need a LOT of headroom and the blues deluxe has just that... A lot of head room... If you can get to a guitar store that has one, go and try one out... My blues deluxe has about 30% more head room than the hot rod I used to own.. Not sure why that is...

I know it is not ideal but there are speakers you can buy to replace the stock speaker that will not only get you better tone, but more headroom... You'll have so much headroom you won't know what to do with it all..

Also the Blues Deville and Hot Rod Deville both have tons of headroom

For clean headroom, cop a Twin Reverb and a dolly to haul it around. It will never breakup before your ears do. You can find Silverfaces 68-74 for as low as 700-800.00.................... 8) Mike

+1 but I assumed he didn't wan't to pay that much... But, then again what do I know.. But yes you will loose your hearing before you will hear any breakup on a twin reverb...

I like the Hot Rod DeVille. I've owned both the 410 and 212 versions. I currently own the 212. I think the drive channels need some tweaking but headroom isn't an issue. I'm actually planning a tube swap (Eurotube JJ Blues Option #2) to power mine down. I'm scared to find max output.

As Cherokee 747 suggested a good used Twin would do the trick and you can pick up a decent one for even less than $700-800.

You can get used SF Twins for $700 sometimes less if you look for them. I have a 76 and it now resides in my infamous closet because it's too loud for most applications. Unless you gig really huge venues, I'd think twice about a Twin. None of the HRD series including the Blues Deluxe or Jr are really clean or great examples of the "Fender Clean" or the "Classic Fender Sound"IMO. If you want clean the DRRI may do the trick as long as you don't crank it too hard. To me the VM's are just digital toys. They just sound like a lot of digital gimmicks and IMO are mediocre at best. And again are not great examples of a clean "Fender" sound.

I'd try a Twin if you want spanky clean. They are great sounding, heavy and seriously loud and stay clean way up the dial. My 76 has been rock solid and reliable for over 30 years.

A fender blues deluxe may not be what you consider "Fender Clean" but it certainly can maintain a clean sound a high volumes... I know because I perform with it in my jazz big band...

I also have a DRRI and my blues deluxe starts to break up byond what my DRRI can do...

They do however sound slightly different... The DRRI has a slightly better sound for jazz... But it's so close it's really hard to tell the difference... This difference in sound may be what you are referring to... I don't know..

The Blues Deluxe should break up later it's a 40 watt amp running 6L6 power tubes. The DRRI is 22 watts running 6V6 power tubes. To my ears, the difference is night and day. The Blues Deluxe and this is only my opinion so don't take it personally, sounds kind of muffled like someone hung a towel over the speaker and way less defined. The DRRI and Blues Deluxe are two very different amps. I've owned Deluxe Reverbs both Blackface and Silverface and rented Blues Deluxe amps from time to time over the years and I always preferred the DR hands down.

I don't take offense... I think you may pay more attention to the amp sound and may have better ears than me... When I listen to my band recordings I hear no difference... And my director and audience members don't have a clue...

I also changed my speaker to a Weber California... That really changed the sound of my blues deluxe... Maybe a little too dark now...

Point is they both sound great for jazz...

I have a blues deluxe and a drri and when I arpeggiate a chord ,the notes seem to run together with the blues deluxe ,but with the deluxe reverb they are well defined. Also the drri is warmer sounding.I really like 6l6s and to me the bassman has some great 6l6 tones.Since I bought my drri though,I have learned to love the 6v6s as well. The notes just kind of take on a life of their own.

Deluxe Reverb ~
for what you need

i have a twin~amp
has crazy clean headroom on the clean channel
and raunchy gritty dirty on the evil channel
but it weighs like 10000 lbs.

i have considered getting a DRRI, then i guess i can crank it and roll guitar vol down for clean and up for nasty

+ the DRRI does sound mo better thatn the blues deluxe

i want to get a 5E3 clone or the fender 57 deluxe for oposite reasons-killer breakup!

When I was using my Hot Rod Deluxe I thought it had great cleans and great Fender tone... until I got a Vibroverb. :D
