Hi
Apologize if this was answered - didn't find anything while searching.
I have a Blues Jr and was wondering if I can use this amp for GIGS....it seems real loud at practice, but that's in a house.
We are playing late 50's Rock and early Beatles (pre-64) at a local bar...

Drummer is not a loud drummer.......I would like to use the BLUES JR with a overdrive foot pedal for the leads...

THanks
Art

Hey Art,

I have a Blues Junior and use it for gigs. It is plenty loud enough for most small to medium rooms, especially for the type of music you are playing. If I ever think I need a little more, I just mic the BJr through the PA.

play in 2 bands, both have 2nd guitarists along with me.

1st band guy has a Hot Rod Deluxe, but it's on the floor, tilted up. OK, volume is fine.

2nd. band guy has a Blues Jr. up on a stand about 3 ft in the air, and it's pretty loud with a full band. He keeps up fine but as a 2nd guitarist, never lead.

Mic will help; I'd recommend a Sennheiser e609 on a budget (same cost as a SM57) ; a E906 if you can afford a little more.

Good luck!

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

The big question shouldn't be is it loud enough? It should be is it reliable enough and sound good enough. For build quality and tone I'd be looking elsewhere. Just my lousy opinion, no insult or disrespect intended. You guys saw it coming didn't you?

You can gig with almost anything but will it hold up. Some say yes, some say no. If you don't have to constantly push it, or you have a good sound system you should be fine. If you like it, give it a go. Be aware that in live situations especially in small bars and clubs you have to deal with crowd noise that may even be louder than your drummer if he's not a loud drummer. You can always use an extension cabinet if you need to move more air. I'd say go for it. You'll never know it's advantages or disadvantages unless you try it. I gig all kinds of rooms with 20 watts. Sometimes I use one cabinet, sometimes two.

I knew you were coming, but I would have expected it if the amp was a Hot Rod Model for sure!! (of course it is in that line up)
I had one for a year or so and had no problems but only used it at home. The Blues Jr. I'm talking about!! :)

The Blues Jr is still in the HRD series and prone to the same problems because of it's construction. The HRDlx has the more drive function added to it. I think the older Blues Deluxe and DeVille were more reliable. The Blues Jr sounds a little muddy to me and slightly boxy, but everybody's ears are different. As always YMMV.

I always thought they sounded boxy, but what I have really become aware of is how the amp has no bass at all.Great idea, but it could have been built better and the circuit could have been better thought thru. For 100 dollars mor you can buy a brand new peavey classic 30.Sounds better and built way better.

Billm just came out with a new preamp mod that adds significant base to the BJ which I agree it needed. I believe that he will now include it in his basic mod package.

I have been to a few blues jams with this kid:
http://www.myspace.com/eddiebluesmusic

He uses a blues junior... It is barely loud enough ... But the blues jams are quite loud... But he does get by with it... They are surprisinly loud...

I've used the blues Jr. at blues jams and gigs at small venues with no problem. The jr. sounded great and got good compliments. If you have a bigger budget, try the 65 princeton reissue (15 watts), or the 65 deluxe reissue (22 watts), awesome tone !!! :D

I know for a fact that a Princeton has a hard time getting over even a slightly aggressive drummer. That's why I sold one many, many moons ago.
It really just hinges on the type of music you play and how loud your band is. The Princeton is a great recording/practice amp. I know you can mic them, but unless you have a really nice PA and mic, you can destroy the beautiful tone of a Princeton.

Same is true of the blues jr.I had to put it on a stand behind me to hear myself with a less than dynamic drummer, thats why I decided against a classic 20.Ithink the classic 30 will work out ok.It will be perfect as a working grab and go amp to take to jams.
