Picked up a brand new DRRI earlier this week but have been very disappointed with the results so far

The tone itself is fantastic but there is a constant hiss from the amp, whether anything is plugged in or not, something that had been a dealbreaker on the Supersonic but not experienced on the DRRI I had tried in the past. This is noticeable when idle, but becomes unbearable if either channel volume is above 3 and when the speed or intensity on the vibrato channel is above 3. When tried with any kind of modulation pedal it makes the amp unusable, although overdrive pedals don't appear to make things worse.

My first thoughts when playing with a strat were that it sounded great, but the second time I turned it on the single coils seem to be causing a whine from the amp, which is only removed when either the strings or the footswitch are touched. I know the additional noise comes from the guitar as it doesn't happen on a humbucking alternative, but I'm surprised it is being picked up so strongly on an amp that gives such a good tone for a strat. Incidentally, neither of my other valve amps have the same level of noise...I tried them on the same socket with just guitar > amp.

When engaged the vibrato makes a very clear ticking noise that (reading other posts) appears to be normal, but I'm surprised it is so noticeable

All the valves appear to be seated correctly & various cables attached as required - I've noticed the rectifier glows a lot more than the power amp valves but I'm assuming this is normal?

Just wondering if the above is likely to be valve related or if it points to something a bit more serious. Bought it via mail order and can do without the hassle of returning it if it is likely to be just valves...but also don't want to run the risk of swapping the valves out and finding the issues remain

Any advice would be greatly appreciated :D

ASP, this is not good news! The amp should be nearly dead quiet at idle, even with all controls turned up(nothing plugged in). If that condition changes when a good guitar with a good cable is inserted( with controls at reasonable settings), then the amp is at fault. I would settle for nothing less than a correctly operating amp. Yeah, the shipping is a hassle. And I can accept hiss, hums, and sputters down the line(500-1000hrs), but not from day one! Art

Before you go too far.

Change locations.
Where you using the same wall plug this first time, any new electronics brought close by the playing area since you first fired it up with a strat ???

Single coils will act as an antenna for all kinds of electrical intereference, Try to eliminate any possible E/I sources.

Are you in the same room every time you play ???

You say the buzz is gone after you touch the strings or your pedal, could be a grounding problem somewhere.

neon lights, cell phones, towers, T.V. ect.........

Good Luck

Thanks guys,

I've tried it in different rooms / different plugs and I get the same issues. Its as though the amp is amplifying everything far more than either or my other two, making my strat and any kind of modulation noisy and fairly unusable even when the volume is very low. Odd really as overdrives sound fantastic and aren't making things worse.

Since originally posting I've double checked all the tubes but no change. If anything the hiss appears to be getting worse so its going back as soon as it can. :(

Darn shame !!!

My DRRI is my favorite modern day amp ever.

I have custom shop 54 pups in my strat and no reverse wound, so I kinda have to put up with a little hum that gets worse if I use gain adding pedals.

My compressor has a noise gate and so it eliminates most of the problem.
