I have a ~10 year old HRD amp, and i've always had trouble with the reverb. when i would first turn it on the reveb would sometimes not work. I would give it a little shake and it would be fine. it seems to be getting worse, to the point where i can't get the reverb to work at all when it's standing upright. the strange thing is that it will kick in when i lean it forward slightly. other than that, the amp works fine. any ideas how i could fix that?

I'm definitely no amp tech but it sounds to me like you need to change out the tank. Prolly some broken springs from rough handling. Any larger music store should either stock them or be able to get them fairly quick. You could also google "reverb tanks" and look online. Try to get a tank with 6 springs if you can as they sound better than the 2 and 3 spring tanks. Look closely at the tank before you order as there are 2 basic sizes.

I'd start with the tank cord. Make sure the cord and jack are good. Get some Deoxit and spray a little on the plug and plug it in and out of the jack a few times. Start with the cheap way out first then remove the tank and take a look and see if the springs are damaged.

The Hod Rods do not have tube driven reverb.

Yeah, I'm going with Supro on cleaning the cables and jacks first. I guess you could remove the tank and try tilting the tank to see if that gives you some reverb. Then the amp could be tilted while the tank is steady. This would isolate the intermittent connection. I,m thinking it's a loose component or wire, that is heavy enough to be affected by tilting the amp. The 5watt power resistors come to mind, I believe they operate the swithching among other duties in this amp. Art

The 5 watt resistors cause a multitude of problems with that amp.

Reverb cutting out sounds like an electrical problem. Could also be a reverb cable problem. Now, if you need to replace the tank, I would stick with the original 2 spring (long reverb) Accutronics. I recently replaced my tank with the same model and wow! Really lush! My original tank's spring had broke. But do check with an electrician first. I have the blues deluxe which uses the 2 spring reverb tank. I am not sure about the HRD. I am almost sure it uses an Accutronics tank. You can order the tank online.

http://www.accutronicsreverb.com/

Email them and ask them what tank your HRD uses. Your tank would have a model number on it as well that they can use when you order.

The reverb on my HRDlx wasn't lush, it was horrible above 2 compared to my other Fender amps. I'd try to upgrade the tank if you really need one. But I'm not even sure if it will help because the reverb isn't tube driven. Maybe Art knows for sure if a better tank would help the harshness of the reverb if it's SS driven.

thanks for all the help everyone. it turns out one of the wires to the transducer inside the reverb tank was broken off. i didn't see a way to get it back into the little plastic clip, so i bought some tiny tubular connector things, that slid over the leads coming out of the coil and could be crimped on. the same was done on the other end with the loose wires.

that took care of my problem for a while. now there seems to be a problem with the coil itself, and due to my prodding, i think i really messed it up. i think the thin wires coming out of the coil are broken somewhere. as far as i can tell, there is no reasonable way to repair it, so i'm looking at replacement tanks. the tank i have in there is an accutronics 4EB3C1B. i liked the reverb, but it was a bit intense, for lack of a better word. i like a lot of thick reverb -- i play 60's garage style rock with lots of it, but i still never turned it up past about 4. anyhow, i'm looking at replacing it with either a 9EB2C1B, 9EB3C1B, 8EB2C1B, or the original.

1. which of these would be best for the sound i'm trying to achieve (the 60's garage rock sound)? are there other, better options?

2. has anyone tried the resistor (R-103) clipping mod? would that be something worth trying? does it depend on which tank i get?

thanks!

The reverb isn't tube driven in the HRD. The tanks in them don't seem very robust either. I'd just replace the tank and try the mod. Couldn't hurt, but to me the reverb always sounded fake. A friend of mine did some reverb mod on his HRDlx. It still sounded bad to my ears but was a bit less.

The outboard 63 tube reverb will get you the real Fender reverb sound. That's probably the rout I'd take if I liked reverb that much. You can use it on any amp you want.

Use this 9EB2C1B and clip 1 end of the R103 and lift it up! One of the easiest mods to do and it is reversible! The 3 spring wide tank works fine in the HR! I have personally done this! I don't know why the poster above states to use the original replacement? Sounds like he doesn't have personal experience with 9EB2C1B tank! He sounds like a purist!

thanks for the information!

so you'd recommend the 9EB2C1B over a 4EB3C1B, 4EB2C1B, or a 8EB2C1B? i liked the original 4EB3C1B, but i rarely turned it past halfway and i've not experimented with much else. i'm looking for a good 60s garage rock reverb.

If you are looking to replace and improve the reverb I recommend that tank! The HRDx reverb is not tube based reverb! It may not be what you expect! I wouldn't put the same stock unit replacement back in! The better Fender reverb is tube driven circuit the HRDx uses an OP amp! It is what it is! With the R103 clipped it will sound better than it did past halfway before the mod.

Years ago Hammond, yes the organ maker, use to make some really lush sounding spring reverb tanks but I think they were absorbed by Accutronics. They used to be a standard no-brainer upgrade for my amps. Haven't seen them for years. Pity.
