Greetings,

I'm trying to find a guitar pedal thats good for creating a slight/moderate overdrive tone. I'm using a Fender Vibrolux tube amp with an American Strat. I want to try to get as close as possible to the sound of a overdriven blackface amp. So far I've only found two that seem to fit what I'm looking for but I'm hesitant to buy that yet until after I get some input from you guys. Any advice would be helpful thanksl!

I'd give the Fulltone OCD a try.

+1 on the OCD, as well as Paul Cochrane's Timmy pedal.

Ideally, find a dealer near you that carries several brands and bring your gear down to try out - usually not a GC or Sam Ash.

My local guy has Keeley, Timmy's, the Xotic and the Toadworks as well as some others. haven't tried the Toadworks but could be nice.

Run a search on this and the vintage forum and you'll find lots of good recommendations.

Believe it or not, the Boss BD-2 Blues Driver is good, especially if you get it modded. The Blackface Distortion gives a good overdrive as well as a distortion sound that keeps a good tube quality (it has a built in tube), and gives a marshallesque distortion as well as mild overdrive when the dist is turned down.

Thanks for all the advice guys! I was just looking at a AnalogMan Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer and its seems to be the classic overdrive pedal. Has anybody used this before and what do you think of it?

Do yourself a big favor and go to www.cmatmods.com
click on the Signa Drive and listen to the sound clips.
This guys stuff is incredible to say the least and very affordable for a hand wired USA OD pedal.

You get three flavors of OD in one pedal, all extremely transparent.
No tone robbers at all !!!

No I don't get anything out of telling people about them, i'm just a customer that loves the product !

The "Hotcake" made by Crowther Audio is a beautiful sounding drive pedal. If you're happy with your existing guitar into amp tone it will keep that sound and allow you to add any amount of drive from a clean boost to pretty hairy, when switched off it won't molest your straight into amp sound either.

Well built quality, a little boutique, I've had one for 10 years and still love it. They are hand-made by a guy in New Zealand by the name of Paul Crowther. Google the names and read up on it.

Cheers,

Try to get your hands on an older Marshall Guv'nor, the metal one that was made in England although the MIC one isn't bad.I use one with my Blues Jr. and it does a better job than any overdrive I've seen. You can get anything from a clean sustaining boost to a raunchy full on Marshall stack sound, quite an amazing pedal,I picked up mine used for $60.
