Hi!
I just picked up a mint condition '94 Twin Amp (the evil twin) this past week-end and had a few questions.

Which preamp tube(s) control the gain boost on channel 1? I would like to get a bit more dirt on the gain boost and was wondering if a higher gain preamp tube would help.

According to the manual, you can run two power tubes (instead of four) provided that you half the speaker Ohms (i.e. 4 tubes 16 ohms speaakers in series, 2 tubes 8 ohms). Has anyone been running the amp on 2 power tubes? Any compromises sound-wise?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Matt

Hi there Matt, I was hoping a "red knob" owner might pick up on this thread. After looking at the schematic, V7a is the first thing the signal sees, then all of the tone shaping controls and finally V7b amplifies channel one's signal again. So V7 is the influential tube, and higher gain here would affect the channel's tone and feel. Changing to a two power tube and halved ohm impedance with the speakers, will change the overall sound of the amp by some degree. These are both, neat easy things to try in search of your tone. Art

I have the service manual for the 94 EVIL twin ( Black knob) with Fenders "fixes" for the channel switching errors

Get it whilst the getting's good.

Peace I give to you.

I'm running my 94 Twin on two power tubes right now. Quality of the sound seems to be about the same, I mainly did it to try to improve the performance at a decent volume because these puppies are rather loud.

Petraman - thanks for the link. I've downloaded the file and saved it for future reference. Also - where in Vermont? I live in Barre...
