Hi

I'm looking for a new lower powered amp to replace my blues deluxe. Looking for a better clean sound, and the drive channel on the bd just doesn't sound that good to me.

Two candidates that I have in mind are the princetone recording amp and the deluxe reverb reissue.

Has anybody done a side by side comparison of these two? If so, what did you think?

Thanks

Friend of mine plays a princeton while I have the DRRI... to my ears the DRRI is unbeatable.

I agree. For an all around amp you cant beat a DRRI.I use mine at all my gigs now.Used to use a Bassman ri at larger gigs and my blues jr at smaller.I bought the drri to replace my blues jr , but it has kept my bassman at home.We dont get the bigger venues like we used to and it saves on my back.As far as my blues jr, well lets just say the drri smokes it in every way possible.Best investment I ever made.

You have to keep in mind that a Princeton was just a step up from the Champ Amp. It's a great sounding practice amp as is the Champ. They are both great sounding recording amps too. Neither is really meant for gigging and have a hard time getting over a drummer. You can mic them, but it's still hard to get a good stage volume. I've never been a great fan of putting guitars through the monitors.

Depends on where you're putting it through monitors - we play once a month, and on the gigs where they've got their act together, have good gear and we have time to sound check and have more than 1 monitor mix, my Princeton Reverb was fine - I got enough out of the amp and the monitors to work great, and the FOH mix was fantastic. I also own our band's PA and we have three monitors, so we normally bring our 5 speakers where we can to supplant the monitors if there aren't enough - otherwise they stay in the car.

However, on all other gigs without a PA or with questionable gear/mixers/no soundcheck, the Bandmaster is a given. We were on one stage where the FOH guy asked us why we wanted to mic the amps or DI the bass (outdoors, HR Deluxe, Princeton Reverb, Ampeg B50r) - he may have been used to everyone bringing Twin Reverbs, Marshall half stacks and SVT 8x10's!

On my Princeton reverb, this was also modded with a Deluxe OT and a 1x12 extension cab so it's louder than stock. Great sound, especially through a Sennheiser e609 or its better brother the e906 - benefit is also no boom stand. I also have a Z-bar for a 57 so both ways are covered.

Also outside, forget about it - the sound just dies away too quickly. Also some oddball rooms - a bar we play in regularly the sound just dies 4 feet away from the amp, so you need the headroom of a bigger amp.

Bottom line, a Deluxe Reverb is a better choice for live/home.

Also to be clear, the Princeton and Princeton Reverb are very close to each other. The Princeton Recording amp is a completely different animal.

If you're still interested in it, I would google "Princeton Recording Amp" to see if people like them or have problems with them, but a Princeton Reverb Reissue shouldn't be compared with the Princeton Recording amp.

To me the DRRI is unbeatable in overall tone and tone variation. To get an idea of what I'm talking about Duke Robillard is playing a stock DRRI for all 11 of these solos ... amazing tone and variation (lessons 1 to 4 to 10)

For mellower / jazz feel ... here's some more

Hope that helps.
