I've decided to buy a RI Fender Twin Reverb, since an original vintage one is way out of my price range. I see them on craigslist and other forums for sale all the time ranging from $650 to $1200 used. I got to wondering- why is there so many of these for sale? Are they not what their cracked up to be? I remember having a new one back in the 70's, and I was hoping these RI were just as good. The ones I've tried at the local Guitar Center haven't blown me away yet tho for the $1700 tag. Has anyone bought one on the forum and sold it? Why?

They are great amps but if your not a gigging musician and playing large venues they are too much amp. They are heavy as heck and way to loud for home/bedroom use. I did buy one and sold it shortly afterwards for the reasons I noted. A great amp though!!

There's a trend now to use appropriately sized amps, whereas a few years back, everyone played Twins, half-stacks, full-stacks, etc. Like fhopkins said, a Fender Twin Reverb is just too loud and too heavy for most applications. Great amps though.

What fhopkins says. You can usually find at least 2 of them used at GC.Great amp, but heavy and loud as hell.I use my drri for everything now, easy on the back and ears. The soundmen are talking to me again. And the biggest amp I gigged with was a bassman.

Twin Reverb is a classic amp; people buy it.

Amp seems a little heavy carrying it out of the store, or the GC people smartly offer use of their dolly.

Carrying it up the stairs is a little tough, but will be worth it!

OMG this thing is really loud.

Soundman keeps telling me to turn down.

I now have physical therapy for my back.

Amp goes on Craigslist.

I'm guessing it's a similar story to that.

By all means try it in the store, but you're not going to be allowed to crank it much past 4, and that will be hellaciously loud.
then, ask if you can unplug it and pick it up and walk it around the store for 5 minutes.

If the volume doesn't get you, the 65 pounds will.

If you're on a 40 foot wide stage all the time, great amp. For home, bar/pub/club, a 40 watt and under will suffice - a Deluxe Reverb's hard to beat for overall sound and usability in many situations.

I I bought one and kept it, I don't sell it because I only paid $400 for it and I can afford to keep it. It's not too often that you can pick up that amp for that price.
I don't use it much cause it's too loud and to heavy, and bandmates always telling me to turn it down, etc. Maybe one day I'll have the need for it, but until then it doesn't hurt me to keep it. It is a great amp when opened up, but loud as he!!.
I use a 40W tube amp for rehearsals and gigs. Plenty loud(sometimes too loud) and it keeps everyone happy. 22w may be even better, but sometimes there is not enough headroom. All depends on what, where, and how you play. When it comes to tube amps, the biggest, baddest, and most expensive is not always the way to go.
Just my 2 cents.

As heavy as they are they just don't sell like they used to. As you mentioned, you had one in the 70s when you were 30 plus years younger it will still sound good but you will have forgotten how much heavier it now seems. In the 70s I had a brownface Concert which I loved but now that I'm in my 50s I wouldn't consider lugging it around. The good news is that if you want one, the number available means its a buyers market. Amps like the Twin and Super are legends but they don't have the demand they once had.

Too loud and too heavy. I have a 76 SF Twin that now sits at home. I don't need 100 watts for the venues I play. When I used to do outdoor festivals and large venues in Phila, Pa. way back I needed it mostly because the PA systems were pretty bad. It's a whole different ballgame now. Great Pa systems and 20 watt amps are fine for what I do now. In bigger venues I run my two 1x12 cabs.

Agree - they're great amps and hold on to if you can afford to keep it.

On my 40 watt Bandmaster, it's great for the clean headroom; I also have the Dr. Z Brake Lite in the back that lets me attenuate it down so that the speakers aren't seeing the full 40 watts. Great solution for 30 watt combo cabs for $179. Tried it in my Princeton Reverb, and didn't make sense for me for live rehearsal or on stage - may work if you're just using a PR for recording at home and want to drive the 6V6's a little/lot.

I bought a brand new one from gc for 1100. I first bought a blues deluxe but it took a $@!& 28 days later. I returned the blues deluxe and they had no replacement in stock so I decided to upgrade and I love my twin reverb.. I will not pay almost 600 for a blues jr. that has no bass at all.. thats just me... I play in my music room just fine with the volume on 4... My cousin has a blues jr and it has no bottom end at all.. thats what the volume control is for.. and I know you cant get the tubes to break up unless you put it at srv volumes.. thats why I use pedals.. I like the headroom and this amp is not for everyone but its for me.... I do not gig, but I love my twin reverb ri.... cheers

Twin Reverb is the best clean sound of all time, but if you ever have to haul one up a flight of stairs at a gig, you'll be ready to get rid of it! It weighs about 70 lbs. If its just going to sit in a studio or practice room that's great, but you will get tired of dragging it around to gigs real quick. I sometimes wish I still had mine for the amazing sound, but I would never cart it around to gigs again.

And like other people said, it is too loud for most venues. You show up to the gig with a Twin Reverb, expect some eye rolling from the sound man :D

Just saw one on St.Louis Craigs List today for $450. Looks like a silver face with different grille cloth. If you really want one they can be found at very resonable prices. The market is so saturated right now with used original and reisssues that it has to have really slowed down the sales on the new reissues. If you want a new one I think you'll be able to find them at a pretty nice discount.

I've been checking, and everyone in here is right. These dudes are selling for less than used Deluxe Reverb RI's. So............................
(for the amp gurus I know live in here):

a) Can you put 6v6's in the TR, or will they burn up or sound like road kill?

b) Can you take out 2 6L6's and halve the wattage without a loss in tone?

c) Can you put 5751's in every 12AX7 slot ahd get oh 50 watts instead; but still good tone?

d) Can you remove one speaker and have the tubes and transformers be OK, or will they burn up without the load? It'll also lower the weight a bunch too. If so, should the missing speaker port be covered, or is leaving it alone OK for tone?

I'm thinking I might be able to get a Deluxe Reverb for cheaper; and a Twin Reverb when I want one.

Hey Hacker, I used an early '68(AB763) Twin Reverb in a blues band for years. About this time, the lead guitarist bought one of the first reissues. It sounded very close to the old amp, but not quite as deep or sweet. That amp was sold, and he moved on to another Marshall. I sold mine and switched to a Matchless Clubman 35. But the Twin Reverb was an excellent amp and I used it in many venues, from church to outdoors. IMHO At lower volumes it's fullness is undeniable, at higher volumes the fullness is retained until it's pushed to the point of breaking the negative feedback loop. After that, the amp roars right along with plenty of authority and crunch. But you probably know all this. Cool amp for sure. Art

I think that's the way to go.
