Well I went with the 212 this time and I'm really happy that I did. I was sure that I'd go for another HRD 410 but thanks to the numerous threads I've read on this site and one like it, I made the correct choice.
I really dig the fuller sound and it really kicks pushing my 412 cab. I still can't get over how damned loud these amps are! As you all are aware, there are a million and one mods that can be done, but it was suggested to me to use JJ tubes. I don't know what they are and the guy who suggested them has yet to reply. I did get on the web page where JJs are sold but I don't have a clue what the pros or cons would be. Anyone? Thanks.

By all means throw out any and all info regarding DeVille mods.

Hi Shupe, I can offer a little info and even less experience with the JJ tubes. Supro has the experience using these tubes. Anyway, the tubes are built in the Slovak Republik, owned by Jan Jurco. The tubes are built in one of the old Tesla factories. They have become one of the best known current tube production companies due to their consistently robust and reliable power tubes. I have a matched pair of 6L6S that are about 5yrs old with about 700 hrs. They are still strong and are within 1ma of each other, when measuring their current draw at idle. I wouldn't hesitate to buy these tubes( burned in and matched) from a reputable vendor. The other current production power tubes, I've always liked, are the Winged C. They are built in the St. Petersburg Svetlana plant, but of late I'm not sure how their QC is going. Art

Hi Shupe. I have a Hot Rod DeVille 4x12 that I use as a back up, and I really liked the clean sounds it produced from the factory. The "drive" was okay, as long as it was set tame. And, for me, the "more drive" was totally unusable.

I called Eurotubes and spoke with Bob (great guy btw) and expressed my frustration, and listened to his suggestions and purchased a full retube kit. I went with the 6V6 option instead of the stock 6L6's that comes with the DeVille. Dropping her to 30 watts was an enormous improvement.

I now love this amp instead of hating it. The cleans are still there, but cleaner. The "drive" channel has warmth/body that it should of had when it left Fender, and the "more drive" is now usable. But the one big difference I hear after installing the JJ's is that the harsh mids are now gone, and those ear piercing highs have also vanished. (don't you love trying to describe sound...LOL)

I was so impressed with the JJ tubes and how it improved the DeVille, that I have done full JJ retubes on my Super Reverb, Deluxe Reverb, and my Vox AC-30.

Hope this helps a little bit.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Thanks guys. I knew I'd get good solid answers. I knew when I bought the DeVille that it was honestly too much amp but I couldn't help myself. Gotta love that tone. I also knew it could be tamed. Thanks again. I'll post my thoughts as soon as I make the mod.

Grover did you replace the 12AX7s too?

Hello fellows, I just bought a used Deville 212, It sounds pretty good to my ears, but I'm coming from a hybrid Vox, so I'm not sure exactly how it SHOULD sound, so who knows if my tubes are bad or not... It's 7 years old and was in storage for a long time according to the guy i bought it from. I am thinking about retubing just due to the age of the tubes..

My red bulb was flickering, but I unscrewed the cover and tightened the bulb and that fixed it.

I paid 400 for it, it's in decent shape, a little rust or something on the metal of the instrument panel, but there doesn't appear to be any rust or wear on the underside of the amp in the tube compartment, so I guess it's okay..

Which kit from JJ is going to give me warmth in the cleans, and then some rumble and bite in the drive channel?

Also, my used amp didn't come with the three function/two button footswitch, wondering if there is an inexpensive option for those online..

any help would be appreciated.

When I owned my HRDV 212 I just got the 6L6 Blues option from Eurotubes, cranked the bias to around 85 mV and made it a very nice amp. Running the tubes at a higher voltage really warmed things up and eliminated the weird noises that amp was making with the stock tubes. It's probably the easiest and best mod to do to the hot rod series, and it doesn't hurt the resale value ^^

I went and had the Omega Amp mods done on my HRD single 12. Also later put in RCA 6L6 Blackplates with Jan Ge and Mullards . The clean channel lost a bit of the chime but both drive channels are as smooth as Santana on a good day and sustains forever. Draw back was loss of some highs on those OD channles so a use of a guitar eq pedal helps out. Still 100 times better than a stocker...
