I just bought a used bassman amp off of a guy on Craigslist. Its sounds fantastic but I have a few questions I thought you guys on here could help me with.

First of all it doesnt have the stock Jensen speakers in it. Rather it has unmarked blue speakers in it. I have no idea what they are. Anyone that might know?

Next question. When I bought it I noticed it didnt have a tube in the slot that the 5af4 (rectifier?) tube should be... Sorry im not extremely proffecient with this kind of tech talk... but it still plays and sounds great. Do I need one in there?

Also 12ay7's. are they a good idea?

Hi Aldric, my guess is the speakers are Weber. Do they have any small tags near the terminal hookup board and do the metal frames have the"hot dog" shaped cut outs? I'd go to the www.tedweber.com site and make a comparison. The 5AR4 rectifier tube is optional. If you desire some sag when the amp is pushed, then go for it. The 12Ay7's would give a little less gain and a little more headroom, when used in the first, second, or both pre amp positions. It would be fun to experiment with these for the sake of tone. Art

From my understanding, Fender used Eminence speakers in those first 59' Bassman re-issues.

I believe you're right, Luxman.

Look for an ink-stamped number formatted thus on those blue speakers......"67-XXXX".

The "67" is Eminence's EIA component prefix code.

Yes, the Alnico "blue frame" speakers are Emminence, and are a bit bright. I would recommend putting 2 ceramic magnet Jensens CQ10 or PQ10 on the bottom, and keeping the 2 Alnico's on top.

Also the amp comes with a solid state rectifier insert which can be swapped out with a tube rectiifer 5AR4/GZ34 or similar. Much better sound with the tube rec in place.

If you really want the amp to shine replace the pc board with a hand wired board (Hoffman), and if you want to get real crazy, retrofit to accept EL-34 tubes (or better yet, JJ KT77). Mine is a great club amp, awesome with a strat, and relatively light. Thinking about getting another one to run dual amp setup.

Have fun!
