First off. I tried the BJ as is. Strat straight in, no FX at all. Ho-hum. I don't think it's too much of a secret that I'm not crazy about the BJ. Tried several adjustments. Definitely sounds best with the volume low and the master high but still not wonderful. I already knew all that but I wanted to remind myself how it sounds and where it sounds best because frankly it's been a while since I powered it up.

Then I pulled the plug to the speaker and connected it to my Rivera 1X12 ext. cab. Ho man. Big difference. Still not a stellar amp by any stretch but definitely a lot better. Acceptable even.

Now I'm thinking rather than spend a lot of money on a new low-watt rig maybe I should attempt to reinvent the BJ into a head unit. I've never done any tolex work and wouldn't want to have a head the looks obviously like a hack job. Anybody ever heard of this being done or if there's a cabinet already sussed out one could just buy and swap over?

The cabinet is a custom made walnut 2x12 combo and the speakers are a Scumback Big Mike Mix.

There are some past threads where several guys made heads out of Blues Jr's. Here's one:

Look around, I think there are other postings.

If you're handy at woodworking I think this is really cool! Or it could be covered with tolex or tweed and a 2X12 cab could have any speakers that you prefer.

Feathers' combo is beautiful, too. Think I'd prefer the head/cab (some like chocolate, some vanilla!)

If you do something like this, be sure to share pics with us.

I had originally thought of a head and 2x12 cab but opted for the 2x12 combo instead.

I am working on the finishing touches in converting my BJ into a head unit. I had completed all the Billm mods including the 6v6 conversion and wanted to take it to the next level. I tried the same things, running my BJ through another closed back 12, and through a 4x12 cab. The quality of sound was so much better that I had to do it. I just made a template of the tube socket holes in the chassis, made some careful measurements to make sure it would fit and cut the holes in the top. Remounting the PCBs was actually way easier as a head unit than in the original combo. As far as the head cab though, I found I am not much of a wood worker...after 3 failed attempts at jointing wood i decided to buy a premade cab. I measured the chassis and searched ebay/craigslist until i got lucky one night. Found a Blackheart BH15 head cab on there and the measurements are near perfect!!! Got it home and the chassis fit perfectly...scraping the sides the entire way in, cant get a better fit than that! I did have to bend down the two tabs on the side of the original chassis to make it fit, and did also have to modify the back panel to make all my extra jacks fit (from the Billm Mods. I didnt want it to look just like a Blackheart though so i removed the grey panel and am replacing it with a perforated metal grill. I am now finished with everything but the grill and am wiring up a special suprise too. I will get some pics up here in a week or so when its finished. Hope to inspire others with this project as it really was fun and easy to do!
Good luck!

Chet, your amp looks beautifol,it would really suit my walnut Strat. Are there any mods to the guts of it?After reading what BMW-KTM did with his BJ I think that tomorrow I'm going to plug mine into my Marshall 4-12 1960 cab.I'll post the results.
