Any suggestions/experience for a 1st time Fender tube amp buyer under $1000. I own a '96 Mexican Strat and have used only solid state Peavy and Crate in the past.

A budget of a grand can take you pretty far in the Fender tube amp realm, especially if you decide to buy used.

Your applications would help narrow down your choices quite a bit. Strictly home use? Band situation? Type of music? Portability? etc.

For the best Fender clean tone, I would suggest one of the Blackface reissues: Princeton Reverb, Deluxe Reverb, Vibrolux Reverb (under 1k used), Twin Reverb (under 1k used).

I'd start out by trying a small Pro Jr - 2 EL84 gives a real nice tone and Jeff Beck even used one at Madison Square Garden instead of his Marshalls. A very LOUD 15 watts and 20 lbs.

Used DRRI hands down. The Deluxe Reverb has been a total tone machine for decades. The Super Reverb is really sweet too as is the Bassman. These are classic Fender amps and are IMO their most reliable.Vintage Fender Silverface amps are affordable and are great too. I have a 76 Twin and 74 Champ. Great incredible sounding amps.

IMHO, and I know some people here will disagree but this is only my opinion. Steer clear of anything in the Hot Rod series. There's a lot better and more reliable amps out there for the money.

Outside the Fender camp, I'd give the Egnater Rebel 20 a try if you want total versatility. Peavey tube amps like the Classic series are nice too If you want a"classic" Fender sound, steer clear of amps with EL84 power tubes too. Fender didn't use them in their classic amps. They are a little more aggressive than a 6V6 or 6L6 which have pretty much been the Fender standard.

Try a ton of amps crank them up and then make your final decision.

Any of the small to medium Silver Face amps can be found for under $1,000. You'll hear lots of folks recommend the Juniors and the Hot Rods. I do not concur with them.

One word of advise. Don't go cheap on the amp. Take some time and really look around and find a good one. Don't buy the first thing that seems reasonably acceptable. There's no rush. The amp is very important. Nothing worse than a bad sounding amp. Ruins your whole day.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

It depends on exactly what you're going to do with it, but IMO you can't go wrong with a DRRI.
