I would build one. Mission amps, Marsh amps, Weber all have kits for less than half the price.

Aren't Blues Jr's simply a beefed up Pro jr, or am I completely crazy?

I think it would kind of defeat the purpose of having an excellent amp such as your own in getting a Pro jr (though the pro jr is a terrific amp in it's own right).

It's the same output circuit with a different preamp circuit and a different speaker and cabinet. Some say the Pro actually has a better sounding preamp despite the more simplified tone shaping. I've never tried a Pro Jr. so I wouldn't know.

Fender CS 57 Champ or Marshall Class 5 would be my choices!

I guess I will just list out my options and you can rant away over them.

-57 Champ

If you are willing to shell out the money for the 57 Champ reissue, you may want to consider a vintage amp. Silverface Champs ($250 +/-) and Princetons (no-reverb) ($400 +/-) are very reasonable, hand-wired, and you get that that great Fender tone. Plus there is a chance of the amp being a good investment over the time.

There was a vintage 1951 Champion 600 on the Dayton, Ohio Craigslist for $700. It didn't last long at that price. It was the two tone brown missing the leather handle. It looked very clean.

Call me crazy... but I just had a real good practice session on my little Bugera Vintage 5 this morning. It just continues to please me with the features and sound I get for the cost.

Headphones for a quiet session? Hells yeah! Got that!

Reverb? Check!

Tone control? You bet!

Gain? Yeah baby!

Attenuator? All there!

They both sound boxy to me. The Pro Jr. is less trouble prone because of its simplicity. They do sound great through an extension cabinet though.IMHO none of the HRD series are beefed up anything.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the Egnater Rebel 20. That is one awsome little amp.

Are you talking to me? :D I have the Egnater Rebel 20 and it's one of the top 3 amps I've played in 40 years. Serious tone and versatility.

My first tube amp was the Epiphone Valve Junior combo. Class A, 5 watts, 8" speaker, just a volume knob. It produces nice tube tone at low volume. It's dark compared to Fenders, though.

The Champion 600 sounds good, but the breakup wasn't for me, and the ones I've tried out all had noise issues.

Marshall class 5 sounds good, but if you search the forums you'll read about vibrational noise issues. I think Marshall may have addressed that in newer models, but I'm not sure. It's a bigger amp, too. About the size of a BJ.

I've heard great things about the Pro Juniors, but I haven't played one personally. I would think that it would sound somewhat similar to your BJ.

I'd keep an eye out for a silverface champ. As phansford said, about $250+/- on ebay.

Yes Sir! Between you and SlapChop raving about this amp I had to try it. It will be my next aquisition when my wallet recovers from the economy. :D

Exactly. That was why I went the route of performing the BillM mods on my BJ and while the mods did help somewhat the smallish cabinet is just too much of a factor and I'm still not satisfied with the tone. I also tried a few different speakers in it as well. I temporarily pulled a Celestian AlNiCo Gold out of one of my extension cabs and tried it in the BJ. That speaker sounded the best of the several I tried but in the end it just wasn't enough. I have since replaced the factory Emminence and the amp is now ready to sell.

I haven't seen those demos but, I have played on one and can tell you it is the most versatile little amp I have ever heard. I'm definitely getting one. :D

Checked out one, it was all I needed to see (a demo, I mean). However the Egnater does seem quite nice.

Wish I had some sort of cab :?
