I recently had to take my amp to guitar tech for repair as amp was "crackling" loudly, intermittently for a couple days, then loud crack(way louder than volume setting) and blew fuse. Guitar tech replaced both my power tubes (were Sovtek 12ax7wa) and replaced with Sovtek 5881WXT. I got it home and noticed a slight hum or static in the background I never had before. It wasn't real bad and would get weaker sounding the longer amp was on, but never went away. 1 week later started intermittent loud crackling again. Turned off. Reseached online and found many techs don't recomend the 5881 tubes due to specs are a maximum of 360 volts and 23 watts on the plates, and a
maximum screen rating of 270 volts at 3 watts. The tubes I want to use are JJ 6L6GC are built to handle 500 volts at 30 watts on the plates, and 450 volts at 5 watts on the screens, which the 212 Deville was designed for. I was also going to replace the 3 preamp tubes while I'm at it with JJ 12AX7's. I have a background in electronics, so I will bias tubes myself. I will also check all 6 plate load resistors and replace if necessary. This amp is approx 1 1/2 old, I bought used from guitar shop and I have had it 1 yr. No problems until 2 weeks ago. I just play at home and no toting around. Does this all sound logical to anyone or tips. Don't want to waste unecessary money back at guitar shop yet as I've gave him $75.00 for failure.
Thank you everybody in advance![/b]

If it's making that noise, take it back to the shop that did the work - they should fix it - did it make the noise at the shop when you picked it up? I always make it a point to play my amp at the shop before picking it up to ensure I know what the tech heard when he put it back together.

It may be that your tubes needed replacing because of another problem in the amp that caused the tubes to go.

Google your amp and you'll see articles on bias and service that may help you to figure out what should be checked as well.

Thx for your input Nedorama,
I think I will take back one more time with some suggestions to Tech. If this fails, I'll do myself.

You can run 5881's as well as 6L6 power tubes, but I never liked them. My HRDlx actually came with Sovtek 5881's and I pulled them the first week I had the amp and replaced them with JJ's. Sovtek 12ax7wa are preamp tubes not power tubes.

I agree, make the tech make it right or get a refund and take it elsewhere.

Is the tech do a bias with yours 5881 tubes ?

He must check the bias before leave the tubes in the amp.

It looks this is the problem
