Hi, I am new here. I just bought a Vibro Champ XD for use with my Epiphone Dot. I only use it for playing at home, so 5 watts is more than enough power. I'm just getting used to this amp. My previous was a Spyder Line 6 15 watt. I like to play blues and classic rock.

Both the VCXD and the Spyder have 8" speakers. However, I am not getting much bass at all from the VCXD compared to the Spyder. Only voice 16 - Acoustic - has noticeable bass. The amp is against a wall, so I should be hearing more bass, especially from the neck pickup on my Dot.

Is that the way these amps are, or is there something wrong with mine? thanks.

Try moving it away from the wall. I think you'll get better bass that way.

You won't get a whole lot of bass from an 8" speaker in a small cabinet. You'll get better bass by being closer to a wall. It will act kind of like a closed back cabinet. I do that with my 74 Champ all the time. It is what it is. The SCXD doesn't have a lot of bass either. The effects really kill these amps. My SF Champ sounds way better and fuller than either one of these amps.

You could put in JJ tubes (I have a SCXD). I think it marginally bumped the bass response a bit. But not alot. I like it better though. Slightly louder too.

I'm no technician, but when I have my pickups real low to the strings, the bass seems to go first. Maybe you need a set up?

I have a tube question - Does the VCXD have a tube biasing feature? If so, how do i bias it? I'm a tube noob

My Line 6 Spyder III 15 W also has an 8" speaker, but it has more bass. That is why I was disappointed with the bass response of this amp. I understand the limitations of an 8" speaker.

It's actually the limitations of the amp. A lot of folks love the new Champs. I'm not a big fan. I'm not a fan of the VM series either. I'd rather get my effects from stomp boxes. If you play a vintage Champ, they have a good bit more bass response than the Vibro Champ. I don't know if it's better quality components or just a better speaker or cabinet.

A good way to tell is to run it through an extension cabinet. That would at least eliminate the amp. Play with the tone controls too.

As far as biasing goes, if you don't know what you're doing or have some electronics background, take it to a tech. There are potentially lethal voltages in there.

If I were you, I contact Bob at Eurotubes www.eurotubes.com and see if he can recommend something. I've used JJ tubes for years and agree they are really great sounding tubes. I tamed my HRDlx with JJ's. The thing is, speakers in the Champs and the HRD series aren't the best out there.
