I was recently given a small fender amp. Model: R.A.D.

it looks to be a small solid state practice amp, probably 15-20 watts. It has two red knobs: Volume and Contour. And is covered with this grey carpet type stuff. Beside the knobs are 4 toggle buttons: two clean-bright and full, and two overdrive-crunch and lead

I searched the fender site for a manual but only hard copies were available.

Any info on this amp? What does R.A.D. stand for? and what does contour do? im thinking its a type of EQ all in one knob, although this one seems similar to the tone control on a guitar.

The amps in rough shape though, the ground prong is missing, the bright and crunch settings are screwed. and im not really sure if the "contour" is broken. (see above) Im not sure what it's supposed to do so i cant tell if its broken.

Overall, for a free amp i guess not bad. I'm going to replace the plug, not having the 3rd ground prong doesn't seem like a good idea. and hopefully il have a somewhat working little practice amp.

Thanks,

Wow! A blast from the past (well, the late 80's)! I had a related model, the J.A.M., for years. It was a pretty solid, and loud combo amp covered in grey fuzzy carpet. The contour, if I remember correctly, was what you described - a tone smoothing EQ knob. Mine also had four preset buttons for different tones/gain settings. I remember the 'lead' setting being pretty over the top and not very musical (as solid state amps of that era tended to not be). One of the other cleaner tones was actually pretty warm sounding, though. I seem to remember thinking it was built like a tank. I remember there being confusion over the wattage - it said something like 'input watts: 75' on the back. It was 25W, but sounded louder. I remember in one of my early bands (this is H.S. mind you) we used this amp for the vocal mic, as another dude had a Crate that was larger in size.

These pop up from time to time on ebay, google shopping, etc.

oh well thanks for the info. But yeah i've heard alot on the J.A.M. amps. and from your description it seems pretty much identical to what i have. including the 75 watt input, so i'm guessing its 25W.

Oh and i fixed the ground prong (well i replaced the entire plug) and everything works now. except the HI input, which is bashed. Anybody know how to replace one of these inputs?

And still does anybody know what RAD stands for?
