Just a quick question about the Super Champ XD. Is this a true tube amp? I was checking it out yesterday at a store and I was kind of puzzled of how it has tubes yet also has some modeling and effects in it. To me this would be the best of both worlds but I'm wondering how this configuration works. Do you get a true tube sound when clean and then it splits into a solid state for the effects?

No. All of the voices, including the clean channel one, are DSP.

It is a tube amp however it uses DSP in both channels. So in the sense I think you are referring to tube amps no. It does offer a lot of sonic options and it is a great sounding amp for the price. I believe this configuration is used in all the vintage modified Fender amps, ie: VCXD, SCXD, Bandmaster VM and Deluxe VM. There is another thread about why the SCXD has tubes that does a good job of explaining the corelation between the tubes and the dsp. If you're looking for an inexpensive tube/dsp amp they are pretty nice. If you want an all tube (no dsp) look for a Peavey Classic 30. They can also be bought for a little more than the SCXD on sale or used for about the same price. An awsome bluesy sounding amp.

This is true. I believe the term is it's a "hybrid" amp. Solid state pre-amp, tube power amp.
Having said that, the SCXD still has a great tone. The tubes make a big difference in what could have been a rather ordinary sounding modelling amp.

I love my SCXD. Fender was the first mass marketer to get the hybrid thing right IMHO. So many brands tried placing a preamp tube in their design to 'warm up the signal,' but having those output tubes, as everyone knows, is what gives you the more musical sonic distorted breakup.
