Hey all, I've just recently bought a jaguar and hot rod deville 212 and have had nothing but problems with the deville.

The first one I got delivered the other day blew the amp fuse about 20 minutes after turning it on, I got a new fuse for it and noticed that there was a noise coming from the clean channel even when everything was turned completely down and the guitar not connected. It sounded like rain with random occasional grumbles, really quite loud. Turning up the treble/mid/presence only made it worse.

So I sent that one back to the shop I got it from and had my new one delivered today, with much the same problems. When I turn it on the clean channel is clear for a few seconds before this noise fades back in, if I switch it to the drive channel it's clearer but if you put the volume anything higher than 2 the noise becomes really noticeable and basically unplayable. Switching it back to the clean channel is accompanied by a really loud pop and this noise sets back in. Really really frustrating seeing as though i've been waiting for this amp for ages.

The standby and off/on switches also pop so loud it makes me jump, even with the volumes and eq down.

Has anyone experienced any of these problems before? The deville i've got is a new one made in mexico. I'm getting really tempted to just send it back and get my money back instead.

(The jag is goood)

My HRDlx was like that. I finally sold it. The Hot Rod series does have a bunch of design flaws. Cold solder joints on the tube sockets, lousy stock tubes and speakers, channel switching problems, 5 watt resistor problems, cheap components, thin, single sided PCB's. My HRDlx swore me off of current production Fender amps until I see some real PCB improvements.

I bought an Egnater Rebel 20 and it's constructed much better. It has a 2 sided, FR4 glass epoxy, plated through board for the components and so far the amp has been flawless and sounds incredible. The thing is it's half the wattage but cuts the mix better and it's half the wattage. It can keep up with a DeVille with no problem too with a second 1x12 cabinet

The thing is, when you get a good Hot Rod amp, it's good. it's just so hit and miss.

yeah, they do seem quite cheaply made and i agree about the hit and miss, i decided to buy one after playing the display model in my local music shop and it was really good and it's been nothing but pain with the two they've sent me.

The main problem is with the eq on the clean channel, anything above 3 or 4 (out of 12) on the treble and middle channels and it starts to hiss pretty bad. It doesn't affect the drive channel for some reason.

Still unsure whether to send it back, I've never looked into Egnater amps really, I shall do some reading.

Cheers

Don't think I'd hold on to that amp, Sam. It's pretty unlikely that it will heal itself. Haven't heard the Egnator, but it seems to be a good reliable amp, from what I've read on this and other forums. A used Rivera might also suit your needs and their reliability record is very good. Art

I agree with Art. But I'd steer clear of the HRD series in general. There are a lot better amps for the money. I really liked the Vox Night Train and the Marshall Haze amps are pretty nice too.

I got a new HRDlx in December and I love it. I seriously considered getting a Marshall Haze at the time, but the sound was just not nearly as good. The Haze does have some additional bells and whistles but the clean channel was muddy sounding and the drive channel, surprisingly, didn't impress me either. This was with an American Std Strat. I spent over an hour playing around with the Haze on two different occasions.

I haven't tried the Night Train, but the HRD sounds better than the Vox AC15.

Every HRD amp I plugged into including my own would always get lost in the mix. That's one of the many reasons I sold it. We all have different ears though. I always liked the Vox better than my HRDlx. The Egnater I have does a lot of tones really really well. I actually bought 2 cabinets thinking I might need them. This thing cuts like a knife. I play in a lot of different bands and it always sounds great.

My HRDlx always seemed to be missing something besides being in the shop all the time. :?

My first real amp was a HRDX and I never had a problem with it. I gigged with it when ever I could. It was a very bright amp, and the overdrive was pretty good. It was also pretty loud to boot. I finally sold it to a friend who loves it. I have an American made Blues DeVille 410 and other than swapping out the plastic inputs, its been golden.

man, I'm glad I found this thread. Hot Rod DeVilles can be a real bargain on Craigslist and I have considered getting one. Now I will steer clear.
