I've been playing bass for 3 years now. I started out with a Mexican made 5-string active deluxe Jazz bass, and recently stepped up to a Custom Classic 5-string Jazz (after waitng 7 months for it to arrive after I ordered it).

I use a Bassman 250, and it sounds great at pretty much all volumes. I also have a Bassman 100 (10 inch speaker) that I use for practice. Unfortunately, with 5-strings and active pickups, that little amp isn't good enough. I was wondering if I could set the amp on top of a cabinet with a 15 inch speaker and use that instead of the speaker that's in the combo. I've also thought about stepping up to the Pro 400 combo amp, but I'm not sure if the sound is any better than the Bassman I have. I know it's louder and there are more tone shaping options, but does it really sound that much better?

Don't let the word "bass" in the Bassman name fool you. You'll find few bassists who are truly successfull getting the tone they want from a bassman. Things have changed, quite simply.

Try some other things and you'll be amazed at what you've been missing.

This is not a Bassman 'dis... rather my own thoughts on using Bassman's for bass. My experience with vintage bassman's for bass was a wild goose chase. Those are excellent amps for guitars.

I'm not sure if you are talking about the tube version of the bassman with 4 10" speakers. I believe what he was referring to was the newer solid state version bassman 250 with eather 2x10" or 1x15" speaker. I have the Bassman 250 with the 15" and it certainly does sound great with bass. It does have quite a few options for tone adjustment.

hey craigsec, if you can spend the bucks, it's always better to have the same amp for practise that you you on stage. I've been playing for almost forty years and learned that trick along time ago. By the way i have two 250/115's that i pump a standard precisin, areodyne jazz and azz fretless thru. they all sound great.

Thanks for the info! Maybe I just need to step up to the Bassman 150 then. I was thinking about an Ampeg BA115, but I don't really know how they sound, and if I get a Fender Rumble 100, I'll be taking a step backward.

:D Hey Craigsec, Ive tried the ampeg combos and like my fenders better. If your considering a bassman 150 go for the 250. I don't know if you are playing out but it's always good to have a back-up. The ampeg combos don't seem to be as tight as the fenders. At gig volumes they break up quicker than the fenders. Also the fenders have line out with good controls so you can run thru a sound system if you want.
