Hi,

I am looking for a new set of tubes for my recently acquired Deluxe Reverb Reissue. I mainly play blues but I get my overdrive from my Fulltone OCD. I am looking for tubes that will provide clarity and warmth. I hear that a full set of JJ's sound great in the Deluxe Reverb Reissue. Which tubes do you guys recommend? Should I buy a set or mix and match? Will I notice a difference between the stock tubes and a different set such as JJ's? Would I have to get my amp re-biased after putting in new tubes? Thanks!

Do you still have the stock Groove Tubes in there? Many folks here don't like them. I thought that mine sounded fine, but I had tubes go bad one right after the other basically until I had replaced them all. Within 1 week I had a microphonic preamp tube, then power tubes, then a couple more 12AX7's, then the rectifier tube. I think I still have the Fender 12AT7's still in there, that's all. And I've only had the amp about 18 months. JJ's are great tubes. Electro-Harmonix are ok. Mesa/Boogie does thier own testing, so if you bought the same power tubes every time, you wouldn't have to rebias.(Since power tubes vary quite a bit, you normally have to rebias after each replacement set, they come in matched pairs. Preamp tubes require no biasing.) Do some research around the web and on this forum to familiarize yourself with tubes and tube amps.

Thanks for your reply! Yes, the stock Groove Tubes are still in the amp. My knowledge of tube amps is still fairly limited, haha. I have owned a tube amp before but I only had to replace a microphonic preamp tube. This will be my first time doing a full swap.

You might wanna try the tung sol reissue's, have heard great things about them too and not as loud as JJ's.

JJ's are no louder than Tung Sols. Power Tubes can only make so much wattage. Even if you replace with the same tube manufacturer, you should always check the bias. Tubes vary. If you're biased too cold tone suffers, too hot and you can cook then pretty quickly.

I do agree, dump the GT's.

Did a search on rebiasing after a rectifier change and came up with a recent thread. Nice...

I also have a DRRI with the stock tubes and have noticed that the rectifier has become very microphonic. If I swapped it for another 5AR4/GZ34 rectifier, will the amp need a rebias?

I was thinking about using a JJ because I've been impressed with their EL84s. Any thoughts on JJ rectifiers? Other brands?

Thanks.

kcanostubes.com. Mike K. is the man for tubes - you tell him your amp, playing style and your budget and he'll give suggestions.

For 6V6, I have used the Mazda NOS 6V6 in my modded Princeton Reverb and they are my favorite tubes. Less harsh, and the tube distortion from pushing the amp is amazing. Have had them in there for 5 years and haven't need to have them retubed.

i recently retubed my Pro Jr with all JJ's. cant complain, it works pretty nicely. just a good overall sound. they're said to be slightly darker compared to other tubes, but i wouldn't say its drastic. consider it a good trait. i like bright tones, but sometimes you can be TOO bright. JJ's do good by me.

that being said, i wouldn't immediately bash Groovetubes. after using all JJ's for awhile, i've been using a stock tube in my V1 spot. its not always wise to have all tubes from one brand. its good to mix and match, you get different tones that way. anyway, it happens to be that my stock pre tubes are Sovtek 12ax7WC. These are actually worthy sounding tubes, although i admit i'm still evaluating that statement as we speak. they're supposed to be a little better quality than WA's, from what i've read, if that's credible. also alot of people say that while Sovtek's aren't the greatest sounding, they're rock solid and will last. but honestly, they're good at what they do, its just that they tend to be compared to higher grade tubes like RCA, JAN, and Mullard, etc. i think people tend to translate that as "Sovteks are horrible".
aside from other brands, i'd actually consider just buying Sovtek tubes if i needed replacement, because paying the extra test fees for GT is garbage, i dont feel totally confident in believing that its worth it.
