hey guys, i got a used fender pro jr. that seems to be acting a little funny.

when i have the amps volume knob at zero (which is actually labelled 1 on this amp) it still produces sound. if i turn the tone knob up, the tone does not change at all. then if i turn the volume knob a bit, the volume fades almost to zero and then gets about as loud as it started when the knob reaches the next notch (which is labelled 2). now the tone knob works, but as i turn it up the amp starts to buzz really badly. it does have a constant buzz even when there isn't a guitar plugged in, but it isn't too bad. it gets worse if i turn the volume up as well. i tried a new fender pro jr. out at a store today, and it didn't do any of this. there was zero volume when the volume knob was at zero, and the volume smoothly increased as the knob turned. it didn't buzz either, not even when i turned the tone knob up.

so, i went home and tapped the tubes on my amp, and the one on the far right (when you are facing the back of the amp) makes a "ping" noise, so i'm assuming it needs to be replaced. im willing to do this, but will this get rid of the other problems? has anyone else had these issues?

note: i was trying the amp out in a room with no other electronics on. i tried two different guitars and cables (which work fine with my other amps) and i plugged the amp straight into the wall, and tried with a surge protector

The PJs are great little tube amps, but many have had problems such as you've described. Billm, who has posted here before has a whole page of mods and fixes for noisy PJs.

Good luck!

wow, i'm definitely not comfortable enough with electronics to do any of that stuff, i've swapped pickups before but thats about as crazy as i've got with a soldering iron

i think i'll just shell out the $10-20 for a tube and see if it helps

A "great little tube amp" should not need numerous mods and an amp tech following you around to eliminate the many well documented issues of the Hot Rod series. Just say'un........ :D
