I'm curious to hear opinions on this topic. I've never used an attenuator and I was thinking about trying out a Weber Mini Mass 50 with my DRRI.

I use the Weber Mini Mass. I find it works very good with my Hot Rod Deluxe. If there is ant Tone" loss I can't hear it.

They are about $100.00 but I think its well worth theprice... I get to play the amp in the sweet spot, with out breaking the windows :D

I always make the same suggestion when ever these HRDx volume issues come up, get yourself a small volume box. You can get them for $20 off eBay or they are very easy to make. Simply plug it into the effects loop and all your troubles will be over. You can turn the amps clean channel volume all the way up to get alot of power to the tubes and control the actual volume with the volume box. The tone really smooths out and gets nice and deep but I think this is because the tubes are running hotter and the amp just sounds better at that level rather than being caused by the box. I highly recommend it.

I'm interested in peoples thoughts on this as well.
I just got a '59 bassman ltd cheap but it's way more amp than I need cause I don't gig. So I can't really crank it up all the time. The guy who sold me the amp aslo included some yellow jackets that I'm trying out. I think if the amp is 50 watts, it drops it down to about 20 watts. I can turn the volume up a little more, but think it's still a bit much.

So far I've only looked at the Hot Plate brand and it's kind of expensive, almost as much as I paid for the amp. And I'm not sure what model I would need or should get. And I'm not even sure if it'll work with the Bassman because of the way the speakers connect.

I own a HRD and like most owners I have struggled to find usable tone out of this amp - very dissappointing. I play in a Praise and Worship band at my church every Sunday (Hillsong, Citipointe style) and the Hot Rod is just too loud.

I have a THD Hot Plate (purple one for 8 ohms). It does make the amp quieter bu in MHO it zaps the tone. Sounds really "muzzled" so to speak. I have also replaced the pre-amp tubes - took out the 12AX7's and put in 12AY7's. It does tame the volume so to speak but still doesn't sound full.

My advice, and I should have followed my own advice and ......save the money you would spend on an attenuator, sell the HRD, and buy a better amp.

I'm saving for a Matchless, or a Divided by 13....I think....LOL.

Jason, this link to a TGP thread might help you with your speaker connection question with the bassman.

http://www.thegearpage.net/board/showthread.php?t=622241&highlight=bassman+attenuator

I've been reading threads and reviews on the Weber attenuators and people seem to like them. For $100 I'll probably snag a Mini Mass and give it try. If I don't like it, it will probably hold its value pretty well on the used market.

Thanks. That's what I needed. Price of the mini mass looks a lot more reasonable than the the hot plates.

What you describe is a volume box you put in your effects loop. The only tubes you get cooking with that is your preamp tubes but its nowhere near the same as cracking your power tubes .

An attunator is what you put inbetween your Power amp/Speaker out and your Cab/Speakers.

It enables you to drive you power tubes too which does alter your tone, However your still missing out on driving your speakers.

The best thing you can do is have a big amp and a small amp. A Small amp for small gigs and home use then a big amp for medium to big gig use.

yeah, make sure the one your getting is OVERrated for your amp
( my Twin~Amp is 100 W, so i need the 150 W webber)

also, they do work, AND once you get one you prob will use it always.
so -
they are worth the money

BUT ---- remember that if you ever can play it loud without an attenuator, that is the best sound your amp will produce
BEcause like someone above said,
with an attenuator, your not rockin the speaker.

like EVH said, "Volume IS Tone"

but how many of us ever get to play a stadium or woodstock-- haha

when my kids and wife are out, and i hear a lawnmower crank up outside,
then i'm playing the stadium.

Also remember that cranking an amp with an attenuator will shorten you tube life just as though you're cranking it without the attenuator. Keep a spare set of tubes.
