I'd check out the Egnater Rebel 20 or 30. I've been a Fender amp guy since the 60's and the Rebel really does it for me. It can get so many classic tones it's not funny.

I like the original Blues Deluxe and DeVille. The reissues aren't bad, either. They have a much more musical (to my ears) drive tone than the Hot Rods. I couldn't get rid of my HRDlx fast enough, but I love my new (old) Blues Deluxe. As for the VOX, I recently traded my Blues Jr. for an AC-15, and it's an awesome amp. You might want to consider the DRRI, too. I don't think there's a sound you can't get out of that little amp with the right pedal. Also, pay close attention to Supro's recommendation for the Egnater amps. The first time I heard one, I was shocked at the tone. It's not exactly "me", but it is a sho-nuff beast with plenty of soul. Finally, if you're looking at spending AC-30 money, check out Marshall's new hand-wired 18-watt combo. It is, in a word, unbelievable.

A friend of mine has the Marshall 18 watter and he's had quite a few problems with it including a power tranny. He recently tried my Egnater Rebel 20 and loves it. It's a hard amp to figure out in an hour. You need to sit with it and play with the dials. This amp has a tremendous amount of tone to offer. I've finally been able to dial in the sound I've had in my head for years. I've been using it almost daily for practice and gigs for the past 5 months and it's been flawless. My HRDlx blew up after a month and a half, then again 2 months later, then again 6 months after that. The point I'm trying to make is choose your gear wisely. Don't just buy gear by price point alone. The HRD series amps sound decent until you push them.

I still love Fender gear,I still have my Twin and my Champ, just not the Hot Rod or VM series.

Sorry to thread jack, but I know what Supro means about his Egnater. The first time I played my Custom Vibrolux Reverb, I knew I'd never heard another amp like it. Yeah, it's got an irritating hiss (that I only notice in a quiet setting), and it also saturates a lot sooner than you'd probably expect, but for me, that amp has "it". Take the advice these boys gave me a few months ago, go play as many as you can, and side by side if at all possible. Trust me, I've bought a lot of amps I ended up hating. The ones I have now, I put some time in with to make sure I liked them then. It's paid off, 'cause I still like 'em. :D

I had a an original BF Vibrolux Reverb and man that thing was sweet. I don't understand why Fender has to "customize" and "modify" classic amp designs. The Custom Vibrolux does hiss. That was the only reason I took a pass on it. I wished they didn't mess with it. It was still a great sounding amp but the hiss irritated me too. I was going to get one and try playing with the tubes to quiet down the hiss but I just bagged it. I'm glad you like yours.

I've heard that the hiss comes from not having a negative feedback loop and from having the effects active on both channels, but I'm not sure about that. I've heard the '63 VVRI has much the same tone without the hiss, so if I ever see one I'm going to have to try it.

If you already have an HRD, try THD Yellowjackets with EL84's. They really smooth out the harshness of the stock GT suck-ass tubes. Just be prepared to mike your amp even in small gigs since they'll cut your output in half.

I had them in for a while and really liked them but now I'm running Svetlana Windged C 6L6GCs into a pair of Celestion GL10-35 10" speakers. I've tried a lot of combinations and so far this is my favorite.

The GL10-35s are out of production but you might find them on Ebay or look for a Marshall 1965B 4-10 half stack and get four at once.

Did you buy a new baffle to use two ten's? I really like the sound of ten's, especially in a tweed amp, so that may be something worth looking into.

Made a new one from scratch using the orginal as an outline template. That way you can always swap back in the single 12" later if you want.

The 2-10s were recommended by Bobby Kyle, an outstanding blues player out of Milford, PA who also works over at Diaz amps from time to time.

Thanks Bobby - you rock !!!
