Hey!

I know the VOX AC30 doesnt belong on this forum, but Im thinking about buying a new amp and the two I have been considering is the VOX AC30 and the Fender Hot Rod Deluxe.
The tone Im looking for is a kid of twangy funky tone like John Frusciante on the song Give it away, or a kind of Ritchie Blackmore tone. It has been stated that Blackmores favorite amp is/was the AC30 and he got his Marshall amps modded to sound like them.

I have not tried any of the amps and wondered what do you guys think of them, and is the Hot Rod Deluxe any good for that kind of twangy funky, slightly overdriven sound I could use for blues and alt. rock or should I consider another amp? If so, recomend one would ya?

Btw, I mostly use a Fender Am Plus with Lace Sensor Golds (Same pickups as blackmore used in the 80' and 90's)

Hope you guys can help me :)

EDIT: How are they compared to each other on both distortion and clean?

Hey OssyVezzy,
I have the HRDLX and 99% satisfied. What not 100??? No. The clean channel is great, I could'nt be happier with that. The "drive" and "more drive" channels have a lot to be desired... That said, If I want to "dirty" it up, I use my Boss Blues Driver... My only comparison is with a Vox VT 30. and for what it does (amp modeling and effects) I think thats a pretty cool amp...

Well since you mentioned the Hot Rod series, I bet you will get a ton of responses...both good and bad

Good luck with you search

Bil

AC30 hands down. It's a heavy amp. It's a really loud 30 watts. I had one on loan for a while. The HRDlx is not even in the same league as the Vox. My HRDlx was nothing but one problem after another for me. If you want to go Fender go at least DRRI. If you want jangle, funky go Vox.

The HRDlx's drive channels are horrible and more horrible. They were like an icepick in the forehead. I had to tame mine with a tube change. But it still wasn't great and never sounded natural. Now I run an Egnater Rebel it's kind of the best of both worlds. It runs EL84 like the Vox for some jangle and 6V6 think Fenderish power tubes and you can blend them.

You should try both amps and see what suits your needs.

It's the AC 15 that's closest to the price of a Hot Rod Deluxe if you're buying new. The AC 15 is around $100 cheaper. I have owned a Hot Rod Deluxe and an AC 15 and if I had to choose, it would have been the Vox. Then again, I had a Hot Rod that started spending too much time in the shop. :x

If I found an AC 30 that was in reasonably good shape and that was close in price to a Hot Rod Deluxe, I know which way I would go... the AC 30.

I'd bet my left testicle you still have the Groove Tubes in it.

Vox is a better amp all round. HRD is a gamble. JJ tubes sort her out though.

JJs are in my sights, will probably change them out later this year...
Im still very happy with the "Clean" channel though, and after a year and a half, I have not had any of the nasty problems some of the others have had.

Same with my DeVille. I've never had a problem bro, I love the way it sounds. The JJ's just make those amps so much sweeter. Its great!

Ive heard bad things about the new AC30s.

I hear that they break down notoriously due some massive speaker problem.

Also the hot rod Deluxe's are notorious for breaking too.

Both sound nice though. If you want to do funk, id go for a vox, purely because fender clean sounds tend to be too clean for that sorta stuff but if it was actually me id go for fender. Because i like fender. Plus vox amps look like bad wall paper.

You might want to try to play through a wah or an envelope filter going in to both amps and see which on sounds funky'er.... funkier? Anyways, that would give you a better idea as too which one to choose.
If you're going for a John Fruciante type of sound I believe he plays through Marshall's and uses tons of effects. Check out this link:
http://www.digitalburn.org/john-fruscia ... dal-board/
I saw and read about this setup on Guitar Player magazine a few years ago on a featured article and the setup seemed the same.

Oh and good luck with your search.... Rock on... or should I say Funk on, YEAH....

I've actually found a Vox AC30 from 2004 with new tubes for a reasonable price, of course Im gonna try it out first, but if it has lasted that long then I guess it hasnt had any of the problems you mentioned ?

Fender323: Yeah, I know, his distorted sound is pretty fat and muddy, but the sound on Give it away is pretty clean. I think its just a little distortion on there. I do have a Marshall 1959rr, but I dont think its as funky as an amp can be, even though I think it has the perfect sound for rock and blues :P

Thanks for answers guys! :D

Hey guys ... The Vox's I was looking at were sold or were too far away to look at ...

It would help alot if you could recommend another amp of some sort in the same price range as the AC30.
Thanks :)
