I'm thinking about getting a combo and cab setup.

Specs for the combo say 40 watt output into to 8 ohm or 4 ohm. There are to speaker jacks in the combo and the specs say that the speaker configuration can be either 1) one 8 ohm speaker and empty jack 2) 8 ohm speaker and 8 ohm speaker or 3) open plug and 4 ohm speaker.

The cab is rated 140 watts at 4 ohms and has two 8 ohm speakers.

Can this setup work?

It would work if you unplug the internal speaker and plug in the 4 ohm cab. If you left the internal speaker plugged in and also plugged in the ext. cab, total impedance would drop below 4 ohms (2.66 ohms) which is not recommended. Besides, the wattage would not distribute evenly to the internal speaker and the cab.
