Hey guys! I got a Super Champ XD a couple of weeks ago. What type of change in tone should I expect when the speaker breaks in?

Right now, my Strat sounds great with it, if a bit on the sharp side to the ear. However, my VM Les Paul Studio tends to be pretty darn muffled on many of the voicings, particularly ones involving gain. Some voicings, such as the 3rd Tweed, are pretty unusable with the Les Paul because it sounds like a blanket is on top of the amp, even with the treble all the way up (I do tend to use the Rhythm pickup to keep the sound fat whenever I can).

I've heard some state that the "trebley-ness" of the amp curbs once the speaker breaks in, which won't bode well for the Paul, since I have the treble on 10 for most channels to try and fight the muffling (with the exception of the cleanest voicings). Others have said the muffled sounds clear up.

So what is the real deal? :D

Basically the whole range, mids, treble and bass will all be more clearer and defined. Just keep playin!

Enjoy!

I do like what I'm getting out of my Strat and the SCXD, though I wouldn't mind it being a hair warmer; I guess that's a 10" speaker for ya. With a Strat, it's so easy for me to get SRV tone and I love that. I've been looking to track that down every since I first got my Strat a couple of years ago.

On the other hand, I was playing my Les Paul through it again tonight and I'm starting to wonder if this is really the amp for that guitar. It's a Vintage Mahogany, so it's all mahogany with no maple cap, and maybe the guitar is just too dark for what the SCXD does. Sometimes I just feel like I'm playing distorted, muffled rubber bands with what I'm getting from the low E string.

Any experience with LP's from anyone on an SCXD? Same deal or am I just a wanker? ;)

I play my LP Studio through the SCXD often. It is different than my Strats sound but not muffled as you're describing. I do play around with the different channels and have different settings for each guitar though.

I sort of have that problem with my Explorer and my SCXD. It sounds great on certain voicings(8,9,10 and 14). But not so great on the cleaner voicings.

But I do feel I have the best of both worlds. For the heavier songs I'll use the Explorer and for the lighter I'll use my Strat.
