I own a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe and the problem is that - because our band is kind of quiet - I cant really turn the volume up (on drive channel I put volume on 2 maybe 2 and a half). So I would like to try some less powerfull preamp tubes to tame the amp.

If I got it right Preamp tube No1 is for clean channel, No2 for drive and No3 is phase inverter, which affects both channels?

So my main question - can I use any ordinary preamp tube (12AX7, 5751, 12AT7) as phase inverter or is there a tube specially made as phase inverter?

I hope this questions dont sound too noobish, I did some browsing through the forums but I didn't really find the answer to this question.

Not noobish at all. Your best bet would be an attenuator. You won't knock down the volume that much with preamp tubes. You'll tame some of the distortion but it will still be loud. I hated the way the volume worked on my HRDlx. Fender uses a Linear taper volume pot. That's why it gets so loud so fast. You are hitting almost full volume by the time you hit 4 on the dial. It won't get a whole lot louder after that. I sold my HRDlx because of all the problems I had with it.

An attenuator will allow you to turn the amp up and keep the tone but play at lower volumes. The Weber 50 watt mini mass might be just what you need. You can even have a headphone tap for another $25.

LOL, while browsing this forum I kind of knew that you will reply to this tread when I posted the topic :) Much thx for that.

I did think about attenuator, but because of the cost (I busted all my music gear money for 2010 and maybe 2011 this month :) ) it is not an option at the moment - prices in EU are a bit higher.

Still, can I use any ordinary preamp tube as phase inverter?

Yep that's all it really is. A 12AX7. I runa NOS JAN Phillips 5751 in V1 of my Egnater to cut back some gain. It's a real quiet tube too. I'd contact Bob at Eurotubes www.eurotubes.com
Bob is the tube expert. He may be able to help with the volume problem too. I used JJ's ECC83S that was balanced for a phase inverter.

You could run 6V6 power tubes to knock down the wattage, but it will break up earlier and still be pretty loud.

I run a 12au7 in V1 to tame some of the volume I changed the linear pot to audio taper. You could try a 12at7 in V2 or V3. I used the same pot as clean volume availible from www.tubesandmore.com. Just unsolder the linear and put the 250K audio in.

Thx for replies.

You mean changing master volume pot? I've been just looking into that today. I will do that.
