Ok, this may sound sacrilegious, but I've done this to two Twin Reverbs for friends (who ran into WAF & neighbor problems using the stock TR). You need four MATCHED 6V6GT that can handle 425VDC on the plates. Read: NOS. Drop the bias down to around 18-22mA PER TUBE. The Twin's pot will go down that low. The output impedance of the 6V6GT will be a mis-match for the TR's output tranny, but the OPT is pretty heavy duty & I haven't had problems with this conversion.

You end up with about 45 watts. Still pretty dang loud, but the onset of overdrive is sooner in the volume range and has a kinda Deluxe on steroids tone.

For practice at home, I like my Vibro-Champ or old Champion 800. I can crank the bejeebers out of them & get some crazy overtones, without the neighbors calling the cops. Really, with hot pickups, you don't need a lot of tube watts for practice by yourself. I cart my Princeton Reverb or Deluxe into the garage when I want to gig with friends. Plenty loud.

For gigs... a good dual 6L6GC (like a Showman or Pro) is plenty good enough. Unless you plan on touring arenas. Then, whip out the Twin Reverb. Plug it into a stack for more loud fun!

The Showman is a 4 x 6L6 platform with 85 watts available (same output stage as a Twin Reverb).

The Bandmaster has a pair of 6L6s though.

Has anyone tried an attenuator. I have one that I use with my Mesa Boogie V.

What impedance does a Twin want to see 8 or 4 ohms?

I have seen/heard them. They work great. Drawbacks for me where:

- Having to wire them in/out when moving the amp (non permanent installation of the box).
- Hideous purple color of the 8 ohm model (THD brand).
- $320 price tag and no one has them in stock.

But they work/sound great and do exactly what they advertise. I know several people who are using them for small gigs.

65 Deluxe Reverb and the twin use 8 ohm impedance speakers. If you go with THD, it's the purple one. Kevin, Mesa Boogie MK-V? That goes down to 5 watts right? Still need an attenuator?

Not trying to be a jerk, but what's wrong with using the volume knob?
If the volume isnt turned up to drive the tubes, it sounds like crap.Ideally you want an amp that you can really crank, otherwise it sounds like you are playing thru a transistor radio.

That's not always true, at home I put my '64 Vibroverb on 2-1/2 and it sounds great. Sure when the volume is higher it sounds better but you certainly don't need to crank the volume to make it sound good.

I agree with Voodoo Blues,I play my 40watt '66 Pro Reverb at home on about 2 1/2 with some od from a Tube screamer or similar pedal if I want tube distortion,or even the clean sound straight through and it sounds great....clean or not, take your pick....the neighbors like it too, because they can hear it outside, but not bad at all.
I'm the neighborhood guitar star. ....I guess I'm the only guitar player.

I like to play my dimed 6-watt Bronco wired up to a Dual Showman cab with a pair of 15's. It really fills my studio without being overly loud. Tone-wise it's like Robert-Cray-meets-SRV......beefy and meaty grit.

I had a Twin RI and used Yellowjackets in it for a while. They work as designed. If you pull all four 6L6 tubes and use two YJs in the center tube positions, I think it runs about 25 watts. The EL84s run in Class A and sound different than 6L6s though. Less low end, more highs. You may or may not like that sound in the Twin.

You can also run two YJs in the center tube positions and 6L6s in the outer for a Class AB. That was my favorite configuration. Still pretty loud, but earlier breakup.

EL84's kill the Fender tone too. I'd sell the amp and get something more manageable. I sold my 76 Twin a couple months ago. It was too loud and too heavy for what I do now. Just sell it, your back and ears will thank you. There is no way to lower the volume without changing that glorious Twin tone. Attenuators will only color the sound. I know I tried most of them and sent them back.

I've had the Twin Reverb Rl for a while now and was wondering how could i reduce the volume but still get a good tone.

I heard about:

Getting a attenuator
Unplugging a speaker
Pulling out 2 tubes

So i'm asking what method would be the most effective and/or easy.

Twin Reverb Rl: http://www.fender.com/products/search.p ... 0217300000
American Deluxe Stratocaster: http://www.fender.com/products/search.p ... 0101202700

:?

See post regarding 65 reissue twin reverb speakers question, fourth thread, is this a possible solution?

Well that is a shame. Cant ever see selling my amp (56 Deluxe Reverb). I learned a while back not to sell quality gear because you always regret it later. Might just have to pony up the cash for a 57 Deluxe RI.

Classic symptom of "GRS"

(gear retention syndrome)

I am terminally afflicted.

I miss my Twin but don't regret selling it. The amp I'm using now just makes more sense. 20 watts instead of 100 is much more usable. I just didn't want it rotting in the basement. I have visitation rights though LOL.

Do you mean a 65 Deluxe Reverb? I'll build my own 5e3 Deluxe before I pay the inflated prices of the reissue that's for sure.

I noticed that, they shot up to like £860($1352) over here!
