Music store I shop has a Super Sonic combo on clearance - regular $1499.00 Canadian now down to $970ish. The price will drop 5% every Saturday until it sells. Been on clearnace a few weeks now. It is new - blonde and oxblood colour.

Is this a versatile amp that will give me lots of sounds from Blues to early 60's beach twang to nice smooth overdrive for classic rock? Any past reliability issues with this model?

Thank you.

Yes, the supersonics are very versatile amps. They will do most styles but i advise you to get a distortion pedal with on since the, "Burn" channel can be a bit dry. Also they are really loud, so if you live with someone volume funny, its not a great recommendation...

Yes, the Supersonic can do all that. It is a LOUD amp, and sounds best when cranked up to stage volume. You may be disappointed if you never get to turn it up past 2. You can tame the volume a bit by putting a lower gain tube such as a 12AY7 or 12AU7 in the V1 position.

It needs some time for the Vintage 30 speaker to break in to sound its best. And replace the stock tubes with some Tung Sols or JJs.

Killer little combo amp, I love mine. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice. I only play recreationally at home, so this sounds like it is too much power for my needs. I have a Peavey 50w Valve King 112 now and it is LOUD too. But it has a great clean sound and excellent reverb and decent overdrive.

Maybe a Hotrod Deluxe 40w would suit my needs a bit better or even Blues Jr.

Thanks for the help - much appreciated.

Don't overlook sub 15 watt amps - there are plenty. Get a decent 1x12 cab and buy heads of some great amps. Any tube amp above 22 watts (Deluxe Reverb) will be too much amp for recreational home use. These days, anything above 50 watts is too much amp for most gigging musicians.

My next purchase will most likely be a Dr. Z Mini Z - 5 watts, 1EL84, 1 12AX7 - for be a different tone than my Fenders for variety. Plus, you can get searing tones without waking the family/neighbors.

If you want to stay with Fender, a Blues Jr. is a great amp and can get plenty loud if needed. I'd go for that before the HR Deluxe - our other band member had one and it's loud, loud and more loud. I'd also suggest a used Champ amp - silverface is fine since they didn't change the circuit, but it's still a great amp for playing at home and/or recording.

For reverb a used SF Princeton Reverb will get you great reverb; you can add your pedal of choice for overdrive (for me, it's the Timmy and Barber Direct Drive pedals).

Good luck!

Blues Jr sounds like a good choice for you. It gets pretty loud too for 15 watts. Just put a distortion pedal in front of it for heavier sounds. I had one for a while but sold it because I hardly ever used it. I would recommend changing the stock speaker though.

I agree. I dumped my HRDlx because it wasn't a good amp. That's all I'll say this time. I do have a 74 Silverface Champ that's 6 watts and sounds great. It's plenty loud for lots of applications. I record with it, do low volume rehearsals with it and just noodle on it. I'd go with a vintage Champ before a Blues Jr. . The Champs are hand wired and easy and cheap to repair if needed though mine only ever required a new 6V6 power tube. You can probably get one way cheaper than a Blues Jr too. Maybe even two. I picked mine up for $150 over 20 years ago.

+1 on the small tube amp. I have a 5 watt running a single EL84 and one 12AX7 into an 8" driver and I love playing on it. Controls include gain, tone, volume, and reverb. It is more than loud enough for home use and sounds great. 8)

Everyone has small 5 watt amps, Marshall, Blackstar, Epiphone, Peavey. If you're handy, you can build a Champ clone kit.

I only use my Super~Sonic combo at home and love it!

There are some fabulous sounds to be had from it (sometimes too many and you get distracted!) and you can tame the volume very easily on the burn channel. It is a spacious cab and added pedals just melt into it...

Lovely clean from the Vibrolux channel too...

Turn it up and feel your flares flap!

Just purchased a Supersonic combo and it is absolutely fantastic.
I read all the forums and debates over whether it would have too powerful but I played a Deluxe Reverb and a Twin and frankly guys once you turn any valve amp up they are load. I own a JC120 Roland and a Genz Benz 60/30 and this is in the same category for volume. I appreciate that I won't get to full output valve overdrive playing from home but hell there are beautiful tones to be had, all within reasonable sounds levels. I read a forum where the gentleman debunked a lot of statements that are made about amps. I think he was so right and many of the variances people report can easily be adjusted using EQ and guitar controls. I recently added the strat 5 way switch loop mod to give tone adjustment on the bridge PUP and it makes that pickup a different beast (This came standard on my 62 Hot rod and its great), so up to a point, a lot can be done to tweak our tone but in the end its up to our individual ears. This supersonic (to my ear) has that beautiful Fender tangle and delicate preamp overdrive even at low volume. Seem to be able to pull tones like BB, Buddy G, Robert Cray, Eric and my all time favourite Gary Moore (still got the blues) is there in the burn channel without any pedals. There are far more fantastic tones in this amplifier that I will ever be able to extract. I'm very happy with my purchase just as others will be when they make their choice of other models. It must suits their ear and playing style. Hope readers will give this amp a try.

Hey Pete
D what kind of settings are you using on the Burn channel to get the Gary Moore thing happening.
