Hi,

Can the original Blues Deluxe be biased? Some have told me yes and some have said it is auto biased. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there Galore, the Blues Deluxe can be biased. But would require a tech to replace a resistor(27K ohm), if the tubes are not in a satisfactory operating range. If you're going to keep the amp, I would have an adjustment pot installed when you take the amp in. The bias should be checked every time the power tubes are changed. Art

Hi Art,

Does this mean if I don't replace a resistor or put a pot that the amp would remain auto bias (if there is such a thing)?

I was kinda hoping the amp would be auto bias so that I could just plug in new tubes play, plug and play so to speak.

Actually had this amp for many years and was under the assumption that the amp was auto biased and never had it biased.

Thanks!
Galore

Galore, I'm afraid the amp is not automaticlly changing the bias voltage to suit different power tubes. It is fixed(set) to provide about -47voltsDC to the input grids of the power tubes. This is a good average setting that should keep most 6L6's from overheating. You don't have to have it checked, if you're happy with the amps sound and the tubes are not wearing out too fast. Years ago, most players never worried about things like bias, hum, or shocks from microphones. But years ago the tubes were built to higher standards and had to conform or be out of the market for the military, industry, and the medical field. The consumer tubes were not held to such tight tolerances, but they were still very consistent. So the appliance manufacturers could build their equipment without the need of this adjustment. Today, however, the current tube manufacturers don't have to maintain a consistent standard, except what the market demands. This is why it's a good idea to check the amp when replacing power tubes. But it's your call. Art
