guy's i have a hotrod deluxe,my question is,it was biased using jj 6l6 power tubes, the plate voltage was 435,biased to 88mv,then i decided to swap with jj 6v6s and when i went to re-bias the reading was 41.7mv....now from what i gather because of plate voltage of 435 and changing tubes to jj 6v6s it was showing that the bias was pretty right for those tubes,so what i'm saying is by changing tubes i really didn't have to re-bias,does that make sense?

You mean it seemed to change itself to the lower setting for the 6v6's?

Strange!

yes i use a amp-head bias probe, dual unit,it does plate voltage and tube current,i took the 6l6 tubes exactly how they were biased out, connected the dual bias probe with the 6v6 tubes and reading was what i said 41.7 mv and 435 plate voltage!i find that odd but amp sounds pretty darn good exactly how it was without re biasing!

I know the 6V6's in my Rebel bias at 45 mv and the EL84's are 40mv for the pair. Could be that the 6L6's put out more power as opposed to the 6V6. I do know you can't bias the 6v6's at 85mv without cooking them.

The 6L6's were drawing 44ma each at 435 plate volts, right? The 6V6's are drawing 41.7ma at 435 plate volts, right? These tubes are very similar except for their output figures. The static reading is the measurement at idle, and there is no reason to expect much of a discrepancy. I think it might be a good idea to lower the current draw a bit, but keep the plate voltage below 450 VDC, unless you can get specific information from JJ on the plate volt maximum. Art

well what i did was run amp for a good 30 mins and then checked the plate voltage and bias,it was showing plate voltage at 410,so bias at 41.7 mv sounded to high as if the 6v6 is rated 14w and plate voltage is 410 i figure the bias should be around 23mv,eurotubes state up to 45mv for jj 6v6 in hotrods, but i decided to set the bias at 30mv and see how that goes,at 30mv it does sound good!,and i want them to last awhile! :o

Yeah, I would usually go for 30- 35ma per tube at less than 425 plate volts, for good sound and long-life. Seems like you've got it set just fine. Art
