Eventually they will improve to the point there is little difference in sound,
but I use my amps to heat the basement while I play in the winter!
Let's see SS modeling amp manage that function!

Side note have you found any strings you like on the cd-60?
I've tried a few brands and so far not found anything I particularly like except maybe the strings by Martin.

peterp,
Thanks for your response, truely I have no opinion on the tube vs. solid state amp thing. I do have a Line six and like it and I 'm happy with it for my use. Just thought the article was interesting.
As for the CD-60 strings I put (believe it or not) Gibson Phospher-bronze 11-52s. They sounds good and I haven't had to change them 4 months and they still sound good. To be honest it only gets played maybe 4-6 hours a week seeing as I usually play one of the Teles more often.

Thanks I'll have to give the Gibson strings a try,
the Martins work well but seem to go dead very quickly.

I've seen that article before. It's from 2004. In the past 5 or 6 years they've made some strides in amp modeling. Having played many of the "real deal" so to speak and modeling effects. I still prefer the tube amps. Solid state amps are current devices and tube amps are voltage devices. To my ears anyway there is a huge difference in dynamics and warmth. It's tough because sound isn't made up of one's and zero's. SS amps are still impressive though. I just don't care for them that much. I don't really care for digital reverb or DSP effects either. Just me though and only my personal opinion. There's no right or wrong.

I find that if i am playing with alot of effect pedals, having fun playing satriani kind of stuff for example, then I am ok with my SS amp i have.

But if I am playing blues or rock AND i want that warm, scratchy, slight delayed tone that has more pick response and (yeah, i know) organic tone, then it has got to be tubes. For my style, a good tube amp makes me smile

I think there are benefits with using both. I used to be all about tube amps and nothing else. But the more I started playing a lot of shows, the more I started leaning toward SS amps. Lately I've been hooking up a Roland JC 50 with a Fender Studio 85, and it just sounds great. They're distinctively different, but compliment each other well. The Roland has a low output jack for you to hook up another amp through its low Z input. It really works nicely.

Bigger shows, I'll use a Fender Hot Rod DeVille, but I'm using SS 90% of the time now.

I have and use both, but my preference is EL84s. 8)

That said, the Roland Jazz Chorus series and earlier pre-Fender Sunn Amps and a few others have a good rep for solid build quality and sound decent.
