$300-$400 I'd look at a used Peavey Classic 30 or Delta Blues 15. Great sounding and reliable amps made in the USA. Easy to gig with in small to medium sized clubs and can easily get over an aggressive drummer, plus it's and twice the power of SCXD. No gimmicks, just a good reliable amps.

I am a big SCXD fan. I have owned one for a short while(6 months) and absolutely love this amp. I gig and record with it exclusively. Tons of tone, a whole bunch of volume and a really great price. I have a marshall and a Peavey which now just sit and collect dust. They are nice amps but they can't give the tone and versatility of the SCXD. JMO. Good luck!

Even though I recommended an SCXD (for a new amp), I'm also definitely going to agree with Supro and Brodie about the Peavey Classic 30. You can usuually find a good used one for a song. They are hellacious amps, chock full of beautiful tone, and they're built like tanks. They have a really smooth and useful range of breakup, so you can get a truckload of classic sounds out them. I was recommending the SCXD for tonal versatility, but for out and out tone quality, the Classic 30 is just flat going to kill it.

I do love my SCXD, but it gives you all the tonal features from a wide variety of amps you can't get from Peavy or those other guys. I can agree though, pedals more then make up the difference.

I agree that a Peavey classic 30 or delta blues will be a much better bang for your buck than a SCXD, not to mention a more solid amp.

I owned a SCXD and I only used the clean channel. The lack of adjustable parameters for the effects made them virtually unusable (aside from reverb). And although the "voices" sounded good, they didn't clean up by lowering the guitar's volume knob or by softening your pick attack, which caused me to lose interest. I sold mine.

I have a solid-state Peavey bass amp that I used as my main guitar amp for a while and I love it. It sounds good and Peaveys are built like tanks. I'll probably never get rid of that amp. A very picky (gear wise) friend of mine uses a Delta Blues and loves it. Peavey makes some nice stuff.
